Political Frailty

Recommended Posts

The DUP's Brexit spokesman, Sammy Wilson MP (who I can't help liking, due to his scruffy appearance and habit of waving paper around when speaking in Parliament) looked even more unhealthy than usual on the news tonight.

He seems to have a remarkably purple complexion for a teetotaler and also disappeared from view for a short while earlier this month.

Quote

"Sammy's been out of circulation for a few days but we'll have his smiley face back on the TV very shortly,"

Just a hunch, but I'd suggest Wilson is someone we need to be keeping under observation.

Democrats are having a terrible week. Three big names gone in a few days.

I honestly continue to be surprised that given the ages of some of the big Congressional names, we don't see sitting Congresspeople die more often. Even with Cummings, he wasn't really that old compared to the 80+ brigade. Hell, the Conyers death could potentially have been a sitting member had he not had to resign over the allegations, which given his age, wouldn't have been surprising.

Interesting.

I was updating the UK MP megalist and noted that John Ellis, former Labour MP for Bristol North West and then Brigg and Scunthorpe, died back in May 2019 with little fanfare, except this: https://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/news/local-news/john-ellis-mp-scunthorpe-tribute-2953230

Death date on Wiki with no reference and still marked as a living person, so that's one rotten edit.

Providing that no current MPs die in the next 2 months, all of the incumbents who died in the 2010s were Labour members:

1) Ashok Kumar (1956-2010)
2) David Cairns (1966-2011)
3) Alan Keen (1937-2011)
4) Sir Stuart Bell (1938-2012)
5) Malcolm Wicks (1947-2012)
6) Jim Dobbin (1941-2014)
7) Paul Goggins (1953-2014)
8) Michael Meacher (1939-2015)
9) Harry Harpham (1954-2016)
10) Jo Cox (1974-2016)
11) Sir Gerald Kaufman (1930-2017)
12) Paul Flynn (1935-2019)

With the exception of Jo Cox, who was murdered, what is it with Labour MPs that reduces their mortality? The Conservatives were in power for all of this decade bar 6 months, and so had more MPs, and a lot of old ones too, yet none of them died?

Tory MPs go to cancer screening services more often? The Tory MPs who got cancer all seem to have gone into remission.

1997 and 2001 likely cleaned out a lot of Tory MPs born 1932-45 who would have been in parliament till the bitter end. There's only been 3 of them since the 97 election (Tory MPs who die in office: Clark, Forth and Colvin) but there was 17 (!) of them in the decade before the 1997 election.

Ronnie Campbell asked the penultimate question at PMQs today. Standing down to spend more time in the charity shops he gets his clothes from I assume.

FFS, tbh a majority government might be welcome so the list can be left alone for 5 fucking years.

One day into the campaign and a reasonably high 56 MPs (given it's only been 3 years and 31 went last time) have already announced they will not be standing for re-election, with more expected in the next few days....

The main effect of this is probably MPs who came in prior to 2015 and were due to leave in the expected 2020 election had things been stabler in the green benches deciding that now is the time to leave. Some very long standing members will not be standing for re-election though.

Father of the House Kenneth Clarke will retire.

This should make Dennis Skinner the Father of the House Should he be re-elected. However this is not as certain as it may seems as first with his majority in 2017 being significantly cut down to a mere 11.4% from a high of 57.3% in 1997 (Kippers lending their votes to the Tories mainly at first glance).

To go Blue in 2019 a 7.8% Swing from Lab to Con is Required.

Given this is a long standing Labour Safe seat you'd expect it to stay that way but no guarantees.

In the interest of everyone's sanity 'the list' will be updated the other side of 12th December during the swearing in. :)

They now say that Nawaz Sharif had a minor heart attack:

Nawaz Sharif is presently on an 8 week medical bail program.  Expect him to be in and out of the news with variable medical maladies during this time, with an acute crisis or 2 in or around Christmas.  Just in time for a whole lot of folks to pick him for their pools.  Shortly in the new year, he will experience a miraculous recovery after his medical bail is established as more 'permanent'.  He will be with us for years, with just enough info released to maintain his medical bail.  He is playing the system like a maestro.

Willie Clarke, 81, Britain's last remaining Communist Party councillor (although he latterly stood as an independent) has resigned his seat on health grounds. He was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2011 and did not see that as any reason to stand down, so it could potentially be something more serious. Of course it could be general age related decrepitude catching up with him, but going by the photo in this recent article, he should be kept under observation...

Alas, Willie Clarke has died aged 84 after a long struggle with cancer. Seems to have been well respected by left and right wingers alike in the area for being a hard working community force, and for his work with disabled kids.

re the Courier

Quote

In May 1973 he was elected to Fife County Council as a communist councillor for Ballingry. He was sworn in two days before the Seafield Colliery disaster which claimed the lives of five men and went on to fight for compensation for the families of miners who had died prematurely as a result of industrial diseases.

During the miners’ strike in the mid-1980s he spoke at meetings all over the UK.

He also represented the Scottish Trades Union Congress as a member of Fife Health Board in the 1980s.

He worked with the community to develop the Benarty and Lochgelly Credit Union and campaigned for better conditions for prisoners in his role as chairman of Glenochil prison’s visiting committee, and as vice-chairman of the Scottish prison committee.

David Steel is 80 - which probably makes it an arms race between him and Steel to be the next leader of a major party to die, given the above stats.

Can't find a link to it online, but David Steel is apparently in hospital right now after having an operation linked to his cancer he had in the 90s.

He's also back in the Lib Dem party after his little suspension.

On the political frailty note.

If Corbyn wins the election we break the record for most Prime Ministers alive at once. It's stands at the current at 11-way tie..

24 Jul 2019 - Present (Major, Blair, Brown, Cameron, May, Johnson)

==

28 Nov 1990 - 24 May 1995 (Home, Wilson, Heath, Callaghan, Thatcher, Major)

==

4 May 1979 - 29 Dec 1986 (MacMillan, Home, Wilson, Heath, Callaghan, Thatcher)

==

5 Apr 1976 - 14 Jan 1977 (Eden, MacMillan, Home, Wilson, Heath, Callaghan)

==

16 Oct 1964 - 24 Jan 1965 (Churchill, Attlee, Eden, MacMillan, Home, Wilson)

==

22 Jan 1924 - 15 Feb 1928 (Roseberry, Balfour, Asquith, Lloyd George, Baldwin, MacDonald)

==

22 May 1923 - 30 Oct 1923 (Roseberry, Balfour, Asquith, Lloyd George, Law, Baldwin)

==

10 Dec 1834 - 15 Feb 1844 (Addington, Goedrich, Wellington, Grey, Melbourne, Peel)

==

19 Dec 1783 - 10 Mar 1793 (Bute, Grafton, North, Shelburne, Portland, Pitt the Younger_

==

28 Jan 1770 - 13 Nov 1770 (Bute, G. Grenville, Rockingham, Pitt the Elder, Grafton, North)

==

14 Oct 1768 - 17 Nov 1768 (Newcastle-upon Tyne, Bute, G. Grenville, Rockingham Pitt the Elder, Grafton)

To be honest it would be helpful to the record book compilers........
