Political Frailty

Recommended Posts

Watching the BBC documentary/tribute to Alex Salmond tonight for the sake of form watching and to see who's absent.

Participated:

Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh, former MP
Geoff Aberdein, advisor
Ian Blackford, former MP/SNP Westminster leader
Libby Brooks, Guardian journo
Gerard M. Burns, artist
Roseanna Cunningham, former MP/MSP
Sir David Davis, MP
Kenny Farquharson, Times journo
Kenny MacAskill, former MP/MSP
Lord Jack McConnell, former MSP/First Minister
George Osborne, former MP/Chancellor
Lesley Riddoch, "journo"
Elaine C. Smith, actress
John Swinney, former MP/current MSP and First Minister
Eilidh Whiteford, former MP

Of the above, all looked good apart from Kenny MacAskill who looks awful for a man of 66.

Perhaps not a surprise to see Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf not participating. A little more surprised to see Angus Robertson not on there.

Absentees that I'm more interested in –

Henry McLeish, 76, former First Minister
Alasdair Morgan, 79, former MP/SNP Westminster leader/Deputy SNP leader
Dennis Canavan, 82, former MP and Yes Scotland chair
Sir George Reid, 85, former MP/MSP/first SNP presiding officer
Jim Sillars, 87, former MP and Deputy SNP Leader

Food for thought...

Jim Sillars health went downhill after Margo died. Reading between the lines of mutual friends (who were furious the press kept quoting him over the SNP collapse as "he's no in a position to remember what he says") bit of mental decline.

Dennis Cannavan looked very frail last we saw him, pre-lockdown.

Politicians ought to have people around them smart enough to tell them to drink a lot of water. I drink 3.5 liters a day usually, and I'm not extremely active but live in the heat...

101st birthday photos of Guillermo Rodriguez Lara. Has never looked this good.

This year has been bad in general, but particularly negligible in terms of oldest state leaders deaths. I'm glad I don't run that fucking pool anymore, it's frustrating.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, who says he remains in remission from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma , announced Thursday he has been diagnosed with "very non-serious skin cancer ."

Hogan had some skin removed last month from his forehead as part of regular trips he makes to the dermatologist. The governor said it turned out to be basal-cell and squamous-cell skin cancer, but not melanoma, which is a serious form of skin cancer.

Yeah yeah....cancer isn't serious.  Until it is.

Nosratollah Moeinian, Iranian Pahlavi-era head of the Special Imperial Office, Minister of Information and Tourism and Minister of Roads dead in France at 103.

Originally got close to the Shah as a journalist strongly critical of Mosaddegh, a democratically elected left-wing Prime Minister who was deposed in a coup in 1953. He oversaw the 50s and 60s communist purges, held a very powerful position between 1966 and 1979 and finally fled with the Shah. Wasn't seemingly on our radar.

He's got folks raising money in an attempt to fund therapy to walk again (far more than he ever made in Congress), for that to even be an option implies that there may be some hope for him.

I have to beg to differ my friend.  You are talking about raising funds for people who have been in government.  They are all sly and know a powerful money grab when they see it.  He may be going through therapy, but you do not know for sure there is actual hope he will walk again.  They have to just try to pull on the Americans heart stings to get into your purse.  Look at an election year and what they spend their donor money on.  Things that will actually help them win a campaign?  No they have to give a million dollars to a women who is already a millionaire to host a few hour event.  But yet somehow the government does not have enough money to help hurricane victims. You can not tell me someone who was in government does not have good health care insurance that therapy would not be covered, and if they do have a bit to have to pay I am sure they can afford it.

9/11 also being his birthdate. I can't begin to imagine what a nightmare that day must've been for him in 2001.
