Thoughts On The 2017 List

Recommended Posts

I don't see it as an issue.  This isn't a matter for quotas.  You just pick people who you think are likely candidates, regardless of gender, race, nationality, or whatever.

Shaun makes a good point about women historically being vastly outnumbered by men in the notability stakes.  Most areas were dominated by men.  For example, when I was a child there were no female newsreaders on UK television.  It was held that female voices lacked sufficient gravitas to deliver serious news.  And in the mid-twentieth century UK, most married women of middle class and upwards did not have jobs. This is the generation now reaching old age.

I'm certainly not advocating quotas! I think Istarted by first saying that I don't want to be another Harriet Harman!

Whilst a 50/50 split would be absurd and over the top I do personally think and feel that there could and should be a few more women on the list. I was highlighting my own unconscious bias or slant of thinking too.

Whilst I accept that there were more prominent men than women in the past I don't think that explains fully the numbers. It's only a partial explanation.

Your right in the grand scheme of things it's not a big issue and in the context of just this forum it isn't a big issue.

Perhaps a mild medium issue that was worth highlighting. That's all.

I'm not a overzealous missionary or evangelist for this issue but I feel it's worthy of mention.

Give it 30 years and it will be far more balanced as more notable women will be either getting extremely old or extremely ill.It will never be 50/50 though as men tend to not live as long as women.

I look forward to that day whenever it arrives!

Enjoyed the discussion with all.

Also statistically picking a 90 year old man is more likely to die in a given year than a 90 year old woman. Also though as more public figures are disclosing illnesses of course more female candidates will emerge.

Well we will see how many are alive at the end of the year.I reckon 5 -10 of those names could go this year.

Well, you know, there are only 50 places a year, and people keep getting older. 20 years ago, Ken Dodd, Roger Moore and David Attenborough would have all been Deathlist mainstays at their current ages.

I feel like we're overdue a death. Not in the sense of in order to break the record (cause I'm not sure if we will anymore), but it just feels like one of the remaining 47 is going to die any minute now.

Dunno, I'd actually rather have a deathless May (long story, OCD) and then a very busy June-July-August.

The record can still be broken, folks.

In 2003 we got 14 and all the hits happened in only half of the year: March-September.

In 2015 we were at the same pace as now and got 14.

I still think we will beat the record.Best way to look at is who is a bad pick.I would say there is a handful only such as Blackman White QE2 Carter Prowse Akhito etc.

I still reckon at the very least we will get Bracknell Downie Christie Booth and King Michael.

Of course if the rumours are right about Hefner he is a May or June hit.I also think Bush is likely to go this year.

As for all the others many of those with Alzheimers must be getting near the end.So we should lose at least 2 this year.

As for the extremely old Graham is another Zsa Zsa but cant go on forever

.Many of those over 90 on the list are not in the public eye so who knows how they are.Stastically we should lose a couple of them at least too.

Record Broken

I think Akihito is actually a decent pick due to him abdicating soon. He might be a year early though . Gay Byrne, on the other hand, has prostate cancer that isn't really that bad, and I think he's overreacting. I would guess one of the poor picks would go, but I felt like that job was already done (albeit MTM).

I will try to guess 16 anyways cause it is still possible. If I had a guess:

1. Mary Tyler Moore

2. Joost van der Westhuizen

3. David Rockefeller

4. Hugh Hefner

5. Ian Brady (really strong gut feeling here)

6. King Michael of Romania

7. Herman Wouk

8. Ian St John

9. Gord Downie

10. Jake LaMotta

11. Errol Christie

12. Tony Booth

13. Bruce Forsyth

14. Glen Campbell

15. Kirk Douglas (if the record is broken, it'll be someone who's big)

16. George Bush Sr

Although doing this list is reminding me how good certain picks are. And I do have the feeling one of our cancer folk will make it to 2018, and it's not Gord Downie...

Completely agree, things have gotten really quiet and I feel like we're going to get a rapid fire row of deaths for the rest of the year.

It is as if 2016 really were cursed, the way things went really quiet suddently as soon as the year ended after the Carrie Fisher/Debbie Reynolds double event.  :o

Apart from some high profile Aussies going, things have been very quiet ever since the calendar ticked over. You'd have expected the trend from last year to have continued as there are plenty more celebs of the Bowie/Fisher/Prince/George Michael/etc vintage out there who have had similar lifestyles.
