livingbygrace 509 Posted December 23, 2024 Well sent in a team, I guess I will see how a newbie does on the rejections. It seems this pool is a bit on the picky side
msc 18,651 Posted December 27, 2024 Back in. 4 rejections, all subbed. One was a surprise, another sad (who I wont name as DDP vultures circle overhead).
drol 12,376 Posted December 27, 2024 Three rejections. I could have predicted two, the third one suprised me a bit.
alt obits guy 3,394 Posted December 28, 2024 Submitted my team late last night. Decided to do less self-censoring this time around. Still a bit surprised with ten rejections, then one more with the replacement picks. Will reveal the rejections come the new year.
ladyfiona 2,705 Posted December 29, 2024 Submitted my team. Think this is first time submitting for this pool.

Also got email back with 8 rejections, lol. Right...lets try again.

Toast 16,286 Posted December 30, 2024 He knocked back Theo Burrell again and I challenged him on it. This is his reply. Quote I'm familiar with Antiques Roadshow; you don't need to explain it to me. Theo Burrell doesn't get an obit because she's an occasional guest expert on a TV show with many guest experts on many subjects; she gets an obit because she's relatively young and has a terminal illness, and she's not a "household name" with or without that. There are thousands of Theo Burrells on thousands of TV shows around the world (and many of them, unlike Theo Burrell, were also well known or successful enough in their field to be talked about or written about in major news media before they became terminally ill). I think the bar for fame/notability for this pool is higher than that. "She's relatively young and has a terminal illness" - isn't the aim of the game finding such candidates? Especially when points decrease with age. Who is he to say why (not whether) someone will get a QO? I think he's too fussy and has no clue how people are regarded in other countries. Haven't forgotten him rejecting the Duchess of Kent.
gcreptile 11,221 Posted December 30, 2024 I got 8 rejections in the first round, and three in the second round + replacement for Jorge Lanata. I kind of get him - he approaches it in a way that he thinks, "would this person get an obit after their career in their 80s", i.e. will the person be "always famous". HOWEVER, sometimes it's still inexplicable, like he rejected Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia (though, to be fair, she's the 2nd wife, and it's not an active monarchy). livingbygrace 509 Posted December 30, 2024 I got 4 rejections. One of them was my fault with missing he was dead already. He did mention a few of my picks he was going to let pass and see what happens but he was unsure if they would get an obit. He did not say who they were. I guess it will be live and learn if some of them happen to die and they don't get an obit. Oh well it is my first year at this one so I am not taking it overly seriously if that happens and I miss points. I won't be throwing a fit over it.
arghton 7,013 Posted December 30, 2024 First year participating and I had two rejections. The other was Jayapataka (I don't understand why, but he seems to hsve been rejected during previous years reading this thread) the other was SPUSA Walt Brown which was a dumb selection from me in the first place.

Theo Burrell will get a QO easily from every major news site in the UK and would do so even if she died having kept her cancer a secret or died suddenly of a heart attack or stroke. Rejecting the Duchess of Kent .That's madness.

I think he thought she was just some minor aristocrat and didn't bother to look her up.
Lafaucheuse 4,154 Posted December 30, 2024 Not to say he’s right because he rejected various picks of mine over the years whom I thought were famous enough but I think I get where he’s coming from. It’s just the same rule which prevents us from choosing wop for example : celebrities mustn’t be famous only for the reason they’ll die soon (age or illnesswise) or because they died prematurely, you do have to earn it while you’re alive. Sometimes the criteria for determining what famous is are too subjectives and depends on a various of biases. I’m not specifically talking about Theo Burell here, but I think that by making such lists, we’ve also downgraded our definition of celebrity.
