Essentially we have now have a permanent conservative government for the foreseeable future. Japan had something similar and it took 46 years for a left wing party to win there. TQR 14,384 Posted December 12, 2019 If this exit poll is true, we’ve got the Tories for at least another 3 parliaments. And McDonnell, off of quoting Mao Zedong, has just told Andrew Neil he thinks Labour is a centre-ground party under him and Corbyn and should continue this way. Unbefuckinglievable.

I don't think he'll necessarily resign quickly either. Might only leave with another momentum/corbynite politician takes over.

the_engineer 1,415 Posted December 12, 2019 I'm very much socially conservative but economically left wing . I'm happy for my tax money to support those who need support and to support libraries and NHS. But even as someone who'll never vote labour , the type of parliamentary democracy Britain is requires a strong opposition. Labour party needs a firebrand leader a left wing Trump but a smart left wing Trump.
gcreptile 10,963 Posted December 12, 2019 From the outside, I don't see a long Conservative majority as a certainty. With the Brexit question settled, things might readjust - but it depends on Labour changing, too. Labour's core problem, in my opinion, was not the socialism, but the waffling on Brexit. And the waffling was a consequence of the working class itself split on Brexit. There might have been a need for certainty, because to be honest, a second referendum would just have been another round in the circle. But then the Brexit, the Scottish question, new trade deals, etc..., this readjustment isn't over soon. And Labour could get ready to attack the inevitable frictions. And the Lib Dems are now completely out on the wilderness, too. Labour gets a little more breathing room on the social left flank.

He can say what he wants, the point of Her Majesty's Opposition is to oppose the government and if the opposition is unelectable they're not really an opposition worthy of the name (kind of in office but not in power). Corbyn should have the sense to resign by close of play 13th December. At which point that party should probably implode in search of its purpose. It's going to get ugly on that side of the chamber. gcreptile 10,963 Posted December 12, 2019 Just now, the_engineer said: Labour party needs a firebrand leader a left wing Trump but a smart left wing Trump. Agreed... I see it in Germany (and somewhat in the USA), if the Left wants to do things out of the goodness of their heart, with long arguments, and as the idols of decency, that's not going to be enough.
maryportfuncity 10,630 Posted December 12, 2019 Oh aye and... the exit poll says 55 SNP seats - Ruth Davidson has promised to swim naked in Loch Ness if the SNP tops 50. So, some tension left as the results trickle in during the early hours.

the_engineer 1,415 Posted December 12, 2019 Ex mining town Blyth valley voting for conservatives. It's actually looking even worse than the exit polls. Also the talk was boris losing his seat Jo swinson is actually more likely to lose her seat at this point. Does that bury remain for good?
Thatcher 2,377 Posted December 12, 2019 Fuck over the working class and don't be surprised when they thump you. The most ironic thing I read this election was a Guardian headline the other day quoting Corbyn - "Let's give the establishment a shock". The people tried to give the establishment a shock in 2016. And you ignored it and thwarted it at every turn. Now you'll pay the price.

Banana 859 Posted December 13, 2019 I know very little about UK politics, but I know enough to know Boris Johnson is an idiot. Did Jeremy Corbyn shoot a baby?
TQR 14,384 Posted December 13, 2019 Looking at how close some of these Tory wins are, it’s the distinct lack of cooperation between Lab, LD and Green that has won the Tories this election. Kensington, for example; Conservatives beat Labour by 150 votes, about 16,000 each. Lib Dem’s Sam Gyimah got a further 10,000. Ridiculous.
Joey Russ 7,220 Posted December 13, 2019 Looks like Labour has overperformed the exit polls numbers, although it's not going to be by much...

TQR 14,384 Posted December 13, 2019 This is not so much a Tory win (they got roughly the same vote % as 2017) as it is a hefty Labour loss. The party needs radically shaking up if it wants even a glimmer of hope of being an opposition people will pay attention to. This result is even more horrendous than anyone could’ve thought, and it’s got to be because of the direction they’ve gone in. Neutralise the hard-left, oust every last trace of antisemitism and get a leader who can actually lead. And stop putting so much energy into smearing Lib Dem & SNP; they have to be treated as allies until this fusty pile of dreck that is the Tory party has ran its course. Which should be immediately after we’ve made a bollocks of leaving the EU. God things look bleak.
TQR 14,384 Posted December 13, 2019 Let’s be honest, the real winner of this election is Professor Sir John Curtice; his exit poll and analysis is frighteningly accurate once again. Genius.
