It doesn't merit an investigation. She made the trip, and she's not denying that...

We all know that but we know commons procedures are rigid.

Ferrier refusing to budge. Says she is staying to “fight for her constituents”.

Sturgeon has again told her to go.

Given she's using the 'the virus changes your decision making' defence, I'm surprised no one's asked her the obvious 'gotcha' question yet: "Following your own experiences with the virus, do you believe you were mistaken in criticising Dominic Cummings' behaviour during lockdown?'

Not sure if @Toast's facepalm is because she thinks I think this is an acceptable defence - for the record, I don't and think they both should have resigned, but given it's been mentioned several times in the press that she was one of those calling for his resignation, surely either she was mistaken then or she should resign now. I'm surprised the press haven't skewered her with that yet. She'll face a recall if she refuses to go I'd imagine - more time consuming but the end result would be the same.

I'm just thinking that her made-up excuse defence could easily be adopted by him as his defence.

Better than "testing his eyesight" at any rate.

Ferrier, a politician and Cummings, a political adviser get caught red handed and neither resigns.

Neil Ferguson,  a scientist and scientific adviser to politicians, somebody with some actual useful knowledge - resigns almost immediately.

Figures.

No- it's a very common surname in Bangladesh.

So that's Margaret Ferrier, Apsana Begum Jeremy Corbyn, Claudia Webbe, Julian Lewis and Jonathan Edwards all in the running for the first by-Election of this Parliment.

Oooh, one thing to suspend the whip in a parliament run by a massive Tory majority.

De-selecting a sitting MP with a majority on that scale...and it ain't like he'd go quietly.

Oh aye, and he's 71

Next election isn't due til 2024 (we'll see) but in that case he'd be nigh on 75. Party moving back to the centre, his moment in the limelight at an end, I can see him stepping down next time around if this drags on. But, his parliamentary career is the only thing keeping him relevant, so maybe not.

I could see him winning as an independent, mind. Given his majority, even if he lost half his total to a new Labour candidate, he'd still probably have enough to see them off, unless Labour could nick some votes from other parties.

Well...

Given the turmoil in the party and this being summat of a test case I was wondering if his mate McLuskey might argue Jezza should step down and prompt a by-election in which he'd stand as a Socialist/independent or the like

Can't see it happening cos Jezza's proud of his length of Labour service, but who knows

Will Batley and Spen have the first by-election of this parliament -  She is slight favourite to win the mayoral election.

The arrested MP still has the party whip but is not returning to Commons in September - it won’t be until his bail date in November at the earliest.

In unrelated (of course) news, this man‘s social media accounts no longer exist.

This is where the patience required for this game comes in. There are a number of points where there may be a scoring opportunity

1. If they guy is charged he may resign to clear his name (coda for we don't want to say he is guilty but Want him out of Parliament asap.

2. If he is tried, found guilty and sentenced to more than a year in jail he would automatically be excluded from parliament

3. Tried found guilty but short sentence (unlikely) forced to resign either by party or recall petition

The case has been dropped due to not enough evidence.

Just to highlight that this was Jo Cox's seat, Tracy Brabin was the one chosen to fill the seat after her death. She's impressed me, the bits I've seen of her, not that shadow junior ministers necessarily get that much exposure.

The new Tory MP for Derbyshire Dales Sarah Dines seems to be in a bit of a pickle, having charged the taxpayer for hotel stays in London despite owning two properties within an hour's drive of Parliament. (Times reporting this behind a paywall).

May not cost her the seat, but by jingo, when the Chancellor starts making us pay for COVID/Brexit economy resurrection, remember this one who put her hand in your pocket....

Margaret Ferrier arrested. Is a by-election looming?

I imagine so. That's the start of the process anyway. The Commons will now conclude their own investigation, if she's suspended then her constituents will be able to launch a recall petition.

Not that it makes any difference. The SNP are polling so high in that part of Scotland right now, and the their base support is so cultish that if they put up Peter Tobin as a candidate they'd still win.
