I know he was a marmite figure, I know some thought him a zany comedy figure who said controversial things for attention, once upset Andrew Sachs,  and who famously got involved in elections he didn't understand, but man, bit disapppointed Chomsky would hurt this reputation by teaming up with Russell Brand here...

I do expect my public intellectuals to recognize when finally, for once, the USA aren't the evil party in an argument, and that they are a little more nuanced. To be fair though, Chomsky is very old and might not have the mental flexibility anymore. But it does make you wonder if he ever had a nuanced view or whether he's just anti-american on principle or because it's his brand. That I outgrew roughly 15 years ago.

Wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't see out the year. Mentally he is 100% there but he looks and sounds so stiff and frail.

Calling Lavrov the Prime Minister suggests otherwise.Would have been unthinkable that Chomsky  a man of such intellect and known for his incredible recall would make a mistake without immediately realising even a couple of years ago.

Never shared many beliefs with him politically .I remember some years ago him saying that the Republican Party was the most dangerous organisation in human history which is just  ridiculous  and mind numbing as are his comments about the US living in a more totalitarian culture than Soviet Russia.

Nonetheless, attached is a video of a chipper 93-year-old Chomsky (from 16:50) and 91-year-old Daniel Ellsberg reflecting upon the late Mikhail Gorbachev, Russia etc. 

 

Judging by this video, Chomsky looks like a safe drop for 2023, along with the usual healthy suspects: Attenborough, Van Dyke, Brooks, Lynn etc.

Well, Greenspan might be a worthy drop too, though seen less of him than Chomsky recently, so it is harder to say with him.

 

But yes, Chomsky and Greenspan will both likely make 2024 and would be understandable drops. Any 94 or 96 year old male is going to look frail to at least some degree.

Honestly I'd love to Greenspan to be dropped. Greenspan is only taking up space because he is really old and he is an economist *yawn*. They are way more interesting people.

I close friend of mine is a professional contact of Chomsky's . He agrees with my assessment that he is in decline and has even said he thinks he should retire for the sake of his legacy as is no longer at his best at all.He has also told me that he is responding less to correspondence and when he does there is an uncharacteristic lack of  intellectual engagement and criticality than you would have expected 3 years ago.

I always thought he was a risky drop. Even if he’s active, he’s way more frail than other active nonagenarians on the list (DVD, Greenspan or Brooks to quote only a few)
