RoverAndOut 4,694 Posted January 16, 2021 AFB in particular has a strong field of candidates: Olivia Newton John is a ticking timebomb, Simone de Oliveira's 82 and a two-time breast cancer survivor, Roy Taylor's got MND and Nora Nova is ancient (90+). But no one can ever be certain with the Scavenger Hunt! Spade is only 2 hits away (Eurovision and Space Flier) and Captain Chorizo, Great Uncle Bulgaria, Biblio and Toast have all got a unique hit, so are technically 2 away themselves. I still suspect it will be done in the next month or two, though.

As I recall, we had 4 straightforward space fliers each for Banana and GCR, with Filipchenko a shared entry - those 8, plus 5 each for DI and AFB makes 18, plus Toast's is our 19 clear winners. Filipchenko is now the headache 20th out.

Will edit to include the Big R.
RoverAndOut 4,694 Posted February 7, 2021 While the current game is in a lull (only 2 hits in 2 months after 11 in the first 3 months!), the death of Leon Spinks has put a few people over the top in Game 2, with a hit in all 5 categories. @Bibliogryphon and @CaptainChorizo take joint-5th place, while @Death Impends becomes the first person to complete the game twice (having already finished 3rd with 3 unique picks). Special kudos to Biblio, who impressively completed all 5 categories with just 5 hits in the entire game! Hits with Jan Olzewski (EU Leaders), Leon Spinks (Boxing), Ken Kercheval (Dallas), Aretha Franklin (Grammys) and Verna Bloom (Kevin Bacon) was all it took! Economical, just a bit slow. 3

Bibliogryphon 9,499 Posted March 16, 2021 26. Yaphet Kotto ti, ba, di, gn @timegets a first hit and theoretically @Grim Up North should be in a winning position as they have four Bond hits but the remaining pick is Robbie Coltrane who is already a winning pick for @Toast and she has a unique. However GUN has more hits overall so if they bag themselves a unique they will steel him from Toast 2 1
Grim Up North 3,716 Posted March 16, 2021 That would be a much better situation if I had more than one unique pick! How is my Mexican footballer doing? (Heads off to google) PS *steal PPS he’s likely dead already so I will have to resign myself to cheering on Toast.
gcreptile 10,929 Posted March 16, 2021 So I see, this is how it goes every round. You can try to jump ahead, but eventually, you will be caught by the pack.

If he was DOA then unfortunately not.

Better people than me have tried I should probably have looked at that thread before picking him. Much easier route to a team than the approach I took! Much easier route to a team than the approach I took! To be fair I looked for names I knew and started with the Scotland 1978 team. I have managed to get an unexpected unique hit though. At the moment your pick is a Schrödinger's Football Player. All you can hope is that his status is resolved one way or another. Clearly Mexican football fans do not hover over the Wiki editor waiting for a tweet that an elderly player has kicked for the final time. Otherwise, you can still win but not by that route.

This game really is incredible. I was so worried when the hits were flying in in September that my picks were going to prove rubbish for the longevity factor in this, but as GCR says, it just seems to be built into the game that this is the way it goes! 6 people one hit away now, and it could be a James Bond actor, a Eurovision performer or an Astronaut who does it. 8 deaths in the James Bond category since we started just over 6 months ago! It's been a rubbish time for Bond fans: 2 frontline baddies, Bond's wife and the original Bond himself all gone in no time. Finally, while I'm here, a reminder Game 2 finished after 27 months and Game 1 after 18 months. Highest scoring category in Game 1 was House of Lords (10 during gameplay), with no other category scoring above 5 before the game concluded. In Game 2, highest scoring category was Grammy Winners (11), with Dallas Actors close behind with 8. Game 3 is currently just over 6 months old and James Bond Actors is already 8 down. I wonder how much longer we've got with this one...

Bibliogryphon 9,499 Posted March 31, 2021 As a group The bond cast have been fantastic. In seven months we have had nine hits including 5 of the 6 most popular picks. The last man standing with four picks or more is Andre Maranne who would end the game. The only two players not to chalk up a Bond hit are me and @Dying Probablywho is still without a hit in any category
Grim Up North 3,716 Posted March 31, 2021 Some kudos to you both for managing to pick 5 Bond cast members and not get a hit! As an Inverse Pool that would have been a tough one this last 7 months.

I tended to go for the safer more obvious choices Judi Dench Julian Glover The seemingly eternal Vernon Dobtcheff Ursula Andress And Marguerite LeWars who might be a tough call for an obit DP's picks do not look poor with the possible exception of Caroline Munro but maybe she just popped into his head for some reason
