Dementia afflicted footballers

Recommended Posts

Shouldn't have laughed at this but I did.

Ralph Brand on the right must surely be worth a punt soon. He's 85 in December.

Kinda had a feeling that Jimmy Millar's death was a hoax, and so it has turned out to be.

Someone coat-tailing as suspected.

Family of Wim Jansen (75 today), twich runner up at the world championships, friend of Cruijff and former manager of Celtic, has announced he suffers from dementia at the release of his biography .

In addition to this, Jansen went to see the doctor after reading the biography of fellow two times World Cup runner-up Piet Schrijvers (turns 75 in December), who has Alzheimer's since at least two years ago, because he recognized some of the symptoms from the biography.

I was contacted via letter by the son of François Remetter, the last living player of the French 1954 World Cup team and also part of 1958 team. His son said he is suffering from Alzheimer's.

Recent reports suggest a minimum of 375 former footballers have dementia or some form of degenerative brain deisease, but other people like Tony Cascarino suspect it is a lot more according to reports. For privacy reasons, not all 375 are going to reveal but with so many footballers now coming public and with the hapless Gordon Taylor now gone at the PFA, many more may now reveal their plight.

I thought it would be a good idea to record those living for research purposes. I know there are much more, but I can add them on in due course as of course this can be amended.

Well you can take Wout Holverda off the list.

Dead at 63. Seems Mr. COVID helped him along.

2 for the price of one - both brothers., George and Hugh Ryden. There were five brothers in total - 3 played football, 2 didn't. All 3 who played football had or have dementia. The other 2 don't/didn't.

Link (lambasting, rightly, the PFA as well)

Thanks for this, I've updated the first post with all these extras. Not sure Breckin should've 'outed' so many are poorly but I personally think the more that are revealed, the more something can be done for them.

That new Venables doc is a weird one. If as reviews suggest the Venables footage is new he looks great. However I'm pretty sure its at least fifteen years old. That and the continual use of past tense to describe him by his friends. "I was fortunate to have called him a friend" says pal Roy Hodgson. Southgate also talks about how Venables used to be his mentor in his sad Gareth way.

This ends with his family saying how they think he'd like to be remembered. Which is, well, yeah...

If he was will he would have been all over the media last summer but total silence.

Has it been mentioned here in this forum that Horst-Dieter Höttges is suffering from dementia?

https://www.weser-kurier.de/werder/profis/hoettges-leidet-an-demenz-doc7e4jppxxw8pibtt8dfs-amp.html

That's an interesting report as it mentions his alcoholism. Bearing in mind football and rugby have always had a drinking culture, I wonder if some, but not all, these diagnoses are all to do with heading it if they are down to alcohol. Guess if the PFA doesn't help with research, we will never know either way.
