gcreptile 10,978 Posted November 12, 2022 Alright, let's get it done. First hit was missed in the previous update, Los Angeles writer Mike Davis who was a replacement hit for some, but interestingly, some people missed out. Leslie Phillips was - finally - a hit for many - end of an era, isn't it? Yorkshire Banker does indeed score with the unique hit of Aaron Carter. At least this one time the risk of picking a risky young person with a troubled lifestyle paid off. Maybe doing porn could have saved him. And finally, beloved soap actor Bill Treacher completes the quartet. Most interesting change of the scoreboard is An Fear Beag (tipped by me to win) advancing to the no. 2 slot because of the safe replacement pick Mike Davis, while other teams might have gone for, say, John Cannan, who was a surprisingly unreliable person for being on their deathbed. But Banana has a 49-point advantage still. Will it be enough? gcreptile 10,978 Posted December 1, 2022 Update and 2023 thread will be posted on the weekend. I think the only change will be that the substitution period is open from the first day on until June 30th. But if you decide to substitute earlier, your replaced people can't score anymore from the moment they're out.

gcreptile 10,978 Posted December 2, 2022 Okay, big update arriving... ...think we left off with Leslie Phillips, so the next hit turned out to be Irish cancer activist and government toppler Vicky Phelan. Big points for a couple of players. Lasted long enough to get a replacement slot on some teams. Doddie Weir another popular name, didn't see that one coming! Clare Marx and Jiang Zemin, another couple of popular hits. And finally, Julia Reichert just today. Considering it's been almost a month, there weren't many hits, but they were all relatively big. Then, a shout-out to Torva Messor for the unique hit of Ned Rorem, a classical art-piece composer who died at 99. Bernadette Mayer is waiting for an obit. I would assume we'll get the New York Times obit eventually, but it's not exactly a headline grabbing name, so let's see... I think this is it for now....? We're definitely in the final stretch. The new thread will be up on Sunday or so. The scoreboard shows that An Fear Beag's streak of not missing the important names has come to a halt and Banana is back in front with about 2 hits of distance. An Fear Beag could use, say, Jeannette Lee, for example. But maybe for the first time this year, a lead has solidified into ..uhh.. solid territory. A different huge story of this latter half of the year has been the rise of Predictor, who has been the "winner of the update" for 3-4 updates in a row now, and suddenly, he's on third place. There you see that the year has 12 months, and November is just as important as, say, January. Don't think I will win, unless my joker dies before the end of the year.

gcreptile 10,978 Posted December 19, 2022 A tiny bit of housecleaning while I'm on it... ...the past weeks have been eerily quiet.. Bernadette Mayer got her New York Times obit to give DDT and Annami some points. Sinisa Mihajlovic was apparently such a surprise, he was a unique hit here, for Bibliogryphon. Joe Monepenny gets well-deserved points for Meg Wynn Owen who was almost universally swept under the rug, or something. Tony Claypole is a unique pick of mine and is waiting for a QO. Dieter Henrich is a unique pick for keltos and is also waiting, probably forever, as it looks like: And that's already it.. the quiet before the final storm? gcreptile 10,978 Posted January 1, 2023 In the wise words of Boris Johnson, let's get it done! We've had some huge hits, I don't need to repeat. Let's go backwards... Anita Pointer... was not a pick?? Too bad, she was picked once in 2023 though, will have to be subbed. And then the avalanche: Pelé, Don West, Benedict XVI - all hugely popular hits, though the popularity means that the score order doesn't change THAT much. Barbara Walters has also been picked several times. Tony Vaccaro was a late unique hit for BabyBlue, well done! I see he got a Guardian obit just six hours ago. I also need to report the scoring of Jet Black. Happened a while ago, and should be in the earlier scoreboard for two players. This gives us the following scoreboard: Rank Team Score 1 Banana 1603 2 An Fear Beag 1500 3 msc 1474 4 Salmon Mousse 1420 5 Predictor 1417 6 Joey Russ 1395 7 Book 1368 8 gcreptile 1335 9 Cpt. gcreptile 10,978 Posted January 8, 2023 Alright, let's call it a wrap! I am unaware of any late hits that impact the scoreboard. I also checked for the possibility year-end obits, especially Sonny Caldinez and Arno, for some late points - but came up empty! So the previous scoreboard should actually be the final one. Which means Banana is the winner of 2022, well done! Those were some impressive 12 months of deadpooling. It was not a start-to-finish walk, Banana never really ran away from the field, only in Decembre did a 2 hit-advantage crystallize. I could always imagine that, say An FearBeag, or Salmon Mousse might still make it close. For example, I regarded Jeanette Lee as a possibly threat. Especially An Fear Beag had collected, in my opinion, the strongest team "on paper", meaning lots of official stage 4 cancer names, even though not close to death. But with a stage 4 diagnosis, you never know.... Personally, I'll probably never pick Shannen Doherty, and probably never Linda Nolan. But they can always have a downturn.... though last year, they didn't. And so Banana sniffed out the "real" targets 1-2 times where others didn't. SalmonMousse was in contention for the first half of the year, and then An Fear Beag and Predictor had some 2nd half of the year cinderella runs. Also worth mentioning is msc's podium place. Some of the gambles didn't pay off, so there was no occasion for him to shine at any point in the competition. But the end result is still impressive. The tweaking of the formula is heading into the right direction. Also nice to see that everyone ended up comfortably in the triple digits. And we covered a lot of names, especially those in the lower region of the scoreboard who nevertheless caught a few nuggets, like Bibliogryphon's hit of MeatLoaf. Gooseberry Crumble's Michael Barratt, Annami's Margaret Keane, and the like. A good first showing from MariNisia, too, at no. 14, well done! It's a difficult pool, you need to collect names over time and then fire them off at the right time - not easy! GuyFrom Future is at no. 16. I suspect we'll see some more of them in 2023. Thanks for playing! 1

Toast 16,143 Posted January 8, 2023 I am happy with my top 20 finish (15 hits). I don't expect to win any pools now as I generally stick to reasonably well-known names, ie people I've already heard of or who have context that I can relate to.
