Been a while since my previous update, nothing much has happened but WWII's only living recipient Woody Williams has slowed down quite a lot now after his fall in 2021, while Vietnam MOH recipients Doc Ballard and Barney Barnum have only recently become frail. In fact in the most recent Medal of Honor convention, only 7 out of 65 living attended, I might add that most of the active MOH recipients nowadays are Afghanistan/Iraq ones as well, so yeah they are starting to become a dwindling bunch.

Someone at the BBC thought this Kay Mellor lady is famous enough for a push notification to my phone informing me she's died at 71.

Genuinely surprised, she's a huge name in British TV screenwriting going back decades. Created Children's Ward which was a huge kids TV show in the early 90s, before writing the acclaimed Band of Gold, a who dunnit set among prostitutes which was considered groundbreaking at the time. She also co-created, wrote and directed much of The Syndicate, and lots of romance type dramas.. Her stuff really isn't my cup of tea but yeah, she's a massive behind the scenes name.

The first series of Band of Gold was pretty good, but it was definitely a case of diminishing returns. I just had to look up Children's Ward as I was certain it was a mid/late 80s programme. I was shocked to see it carried on until 2000 but more so that it started in 89. I was certain I was watching it when I was about 9 or 10. Faulty memory strikes again.

Did a Peel Session apparently, so not completely off the radar, but hey, if they aren't in the Charts I'm never going to have heard of them.

 

Anyhow, real name Gareth Jones and according to Discogs also sometime known as Gareth Pennington.

Definitely one for me - so many significant cultish musicians falling this year that the List of the Lost show is already recorded and edited up to 60 mins (and we only have two hours) - also dropping some tracks into the usual week to week shows (which is what we'll do with Gareth). He has a Bandcamp page, album below has a bizarre range of tags including comedy, lounge, strange, computer game and - ahem - incredibly strange music

I agree with Crem.  A sudden death is a sudden death.  I'm surprised anyone would dispute this. 

A few years ago I took an elderly neighbour into town to do some shopping.  She seemed as fit as a fiddle but died the following day from a brain aneurysm. 

I think you could say that the death of someone in extreme old age will never be unexpected, but it can still be sudden.  It's not quite the same thing.

Yeah, my uncle died in his late 80s a decade ago. When the family mentioned this to one of his neighbours, their reaction was: "Oh no, and he was going to fix up my kitchen!"  He remained active and healthy, right up to the day he felt a bit tired, went for a nap, and never woke up.

 

A proper shock, yes, but still considerably preferable to him suffering from cancer or dementia for years imo.
