Last appearances

Recommended Posts

Casually browsing Reddit I find a subreddit dedicated to last photos of people. Below are Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ian Curtis and Nikola Tesla:

Spoiler

Franklin D. Roosevelt day before he died:

Unfinished_Painting_of_FDR.jpg.03d35923210d74dbc2b59b3a428090c3.jpg

The B&W photo wasn't FDR's last appearance, technically. His final portrait is particularly fascinating, because he died during it.

Alphonso de Portago (11 October 1928 – 12 May 1957), Spanish aristocrat, racecar driver, playboy

A photo of kissing one of his many girlfriends, actress Linda Christian, before the last lap of the race Mille Miglia. He and his co-driver died, as well as 9 spectators, 5 of whom were children. This was the last Mille Miglia race.

One of the last known photos of the crew of Space Shuttle Challenger as they arrive towards the launchpad to board the shuttle. All 7 astronauts on board were killed after the shuttle exploded during launch due to an O-Ring seal joint failure because of the freezing temperatures on the day of the launch.

Haredi Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, Prince of Torah, under 24 hours before his death at 94.

kanievsky.jpg.fce77f7ba2deca4ba839e7c300c1ef98.jpg

In January 2010 he ruled that "time of death may only be determined when one’s heart ceases to function, without any connection whatsoever to brain activity" - he went on to live another twelve years and two months. On the 18th of March 2022 he collapsed at his home from a massive heart attack and died quickly despite CPR.

Do posthumous photos count? Both Queen Victoria and Edward VII were photographed on their deathbed.

Incidentally, the last photo of the Queen Mother. Attending her daughter's funeral on 15th February 2002. She died less than a month later on the 9th April 2002 and is clearly the most famous centenary who has ever lived...

As we wait for the death of a certain U.S President so that we can post his last photo on this thread, here is supposedly the last known photo of U.S President Warren Harding (on the left in the photo) to keep us occupied for the time being.

What "Why" ? Why not ?

I mean, obviously, you do you etc, but an old woman mourning her daughter and waiting for her own death is not often considered a pleasure to behold.

the whole principle of this site is not a pleasure to behold. Yet you're here ?

I wanted to see how she looked 2 months prior to her death and also, the fact that I didn't find any picture of her at that occasion makes me wonder if she was able to be there…
