Charles Kennedy drank himself to death within a few weeks of losing his seat in 2015.

He was actually getting himself together after being off the wagon for ages during the coalition but it was too late.

Before your time, Clorox but popular young Paisley MP Gordon McMaster killed himself shortly after the 1997 election. It turned out he had been in the closet over his homosexuality and been blackmailed by another labour MP, Tommy Graham, whom McMaster had looked up to. Very sad story. That seat became Mhairi Black's years later, incidentally.

I think higher turnout means that Reform will have a strong result. It's similar to a lot of elections in other countries where the rising divide increases turnout.

I also believe that there are "shy reform" voters instead of "shy tories". Yes, I do think the Tories will get pretty much destroyed.

While we're in this pre-exit poll lull, just a couple of thoughts from re-watching the 1997 coverage recently:

  • There was discussion about how little and vague the Labour manifesto was, and how this would make it difficult to govern as they didn't have a mandate to do very much.
  • There was also (which surprised me) discussion of how there wasn't a great deal of enthusiasm about Labour winning, more about the Tories losing (sound familiar?).
  • A recognition that voters had voted tactically in greater numbers than ever before, to really punish the Tories.
  • Discussions about how the splits in the Tory Party had damaged the brand, with one side claiming they were right that Major was leading them to defeat and the other claiming it was these naysayers that had made the defeat so bad.

There were probably more parallels but it was a couple of weeks ago now and I can't remember it all quite so vividly. Doesn't feel so different after all, hoping for a similar result tonight and a similar outcome over the next 4-5 years.

History doesn't repeat but it does rhyme.

From what I recall, that what was being said about Labour, that there was a lack of enthusiasm etc. But when it did become this humongous majority, it did change the temperature a bit and there was more expectation and dare I say euphoria upon the scale of victory. If Labour had squeaked in with a bare majority, then that narrative about a lack of enthusiasm for the new government would have been maintained.

And so.

Sky begins its coverage.

Settle in.

I may briefly flip to the BBC just at 10 to see the exit poll results.

I had too, to be fair it wasn't a direct promotion, he took 7 years off to do some lobbying whilst shagging a pig on a remote beach in Spain.
