livingbygrace 420 Posted November 7 Mitch gave a press conference on how he thought the elections went. Boy he looked so frail and almost sickly to me. Also slow in speech and not much power behind his voice. I thought he was retiring in January but it seems he is just stepping down as leader, and has a few more years. I cannot see him having the energy for it, but he could prove me wrong https://www.c-span.org/video/?539853-1/minority-leader-mcconnell-holds-news-conference-2024-election

Brad252 821 Posted November 7 His seat is next due for election in 2026 and I believe he won't run again. Given his failing health, including those freezes in public, combined with his age, I wouldn't be surprised if he does a Dianne Feinstein and dies before then. He'll likely pull a Reid and die not too many years after his final term anyway. His health doesn't seem to be great, and he seems to be the kind of sod who needs to work to keep going. True but if you get a head injury or broken hip at nearly 83 it can trigger a rapid decline.

Put them in their LazyBoy recliners and give them their afternoon tea. Scary these people are running our government.

If you look at the 10 most populated countries, nearly all could be called gerontocracies: China - Xi is 71, average age of the Politburo members is around 65. India - Modi is 74, nearly all the top ministers are 65+, oldest being 80. US - Biden is 82, Trump 78. Average age of the senate is 64 with a plethora of octogenarians. Indonesia - Pres. Subianto is 73. Pakistan - PM Sharif is 73, Pres. Zardari is 69. Both the Senate Chair and the National Assembly Speaker are in their early 70s. Nigeria - Pres. Tinubu is 72. Main opposition leader (Atiku Abubakar) is 78. Brazil - Pres. Lula is 79, VP Ackmin is 72. Barred self coup-attempter Bolsonaro is 69. Bangladesh - Head of Govt Yunus is 84, Pres. Shahabuddin is 74. Russia - Putin is 72 and most of his most trusted comrades are around the same age. Mexico (the 10th-most populated after the forementioned ones) is an exception where the President is only 62, but these nine countries make 54.2% of the world's population. The 70s and 80s Soviet Union is still used as an example of a gerontocracy, but despite his ailments Brezhnev was only 75 when he died, succeeded by 68-year-old Andropov (who died at 69, succeeded by Chernenko who was 72) Part of my point is that any one of these can start mentally declining quite quickly due to undetected dementia, TIA or other ailments, and the question is what happens then? In most of these countries one person already holds too much power.

It's mental capacity that counts and (to some extent) physical capability. No use being mentally sharp if you're unable to articulate your thoughts.

The world would improve overnight.
