Kill or Save: UK No.2 Hits of the 60s

You’re back! That’s nice. It’s another edition of Deathlist’s jovial jukebox of judgement, Kill or Save!

We are exploring the top end of the UK music charts, from the 60s right through to the 00s, and we’re going great guns in our quest to sort out the best songs which fell just shy of reaching the coveted top spot. The nailbiter of a 90s final saw the top 10 virtually inseparable for what felt like a couple of years, but eventually, a hugely surprising top-2 shootout saw kitsch little Swedish bop Lovefool crowned the winner of an accolade that frankly dwarfs anything you’ll see in televised awards ceremonies: deathlist.net's Best UK Charts No.2 of the 1990s.

So, that was the 90s, but before we move forward, we must go back. The 60s was an interesting decade. People were wearing new types of clothes, going out to new types of places, smoking new types of stuff, and experimenting with new types of music. Rock, pop, soul, psychedelia, tunes your nan hummed along to, it’s all here. So come one, come all: we have 128 of such things to whittle down to 1. Oh joy.

A big fat congratuwelldone is in order, for this is our 10th edition of the game! Over 400 days, over 16,000 posts and quite the hall of fame we’re building. (see most recent game)

A quick reminder of how it works:

- Each song starts with 20 points (whether it deserves it or not).

- You can only vote once a day. To avoid any time zone confusion, please put a date at the top of your scoring post (e.g. “Fri 15 Dec”, “15-12-2023”, whatever, as long as it’s clear and doesn’t just say “today” or some shit.)

- Once a day, you can award 4 points to and subtract 6 from the songs of your choosing in the current round. You can split your daily +4 and -6 between as many songs as you like, it’s down to you.

- Ideally give a little listen to any songs in the list you don’t know already before voting. You are, after all, voting based on how good/bad you think each song is. I know it takes a few mins of precious time, but hey, it could be an education.

- Please do bump off any songs you dislike/consider to be the weakest link, but don’t for fuck sake just knock them down because they’re scoring low. This is meant to gauge collective opinion, it’s not a massacre and we’re not pushed for time. Be tactical, be contrary, but be true to what you actually think.

- Make sure you copy and paste the most recent voter’s scoreboard when you take your turn to score. For your own ease, ‘paste as plain text’ to get rid of the previous poster’s formatting.

- Just to make it clear for everyone, please mark your scores after the song title and adjust the song’s points total as you go. Ideally make your scores bold too. As an example:

24 Absolute Tune — Slaps +4

20 Ignore — Lift Music

20 Bland — Drowning In Beige

19 The Cleveland Steamers — Dog Egg -1

16 Ear Piss — Left To Die

15 Shite — Hateful Bilge -5

Everyone makes mistakes sometimes, so I’d just like to shout out to all of our careful and attentive players who are shit hot on any potential errors that may arise. This here is serious business don’t you know, so thank you for keeping things in order.

See, below, the complete list of UK No.2 songs from the 1960s. I’ll warn you, it’s not all good:

God.

As ever, we will start with 5 group stages, beginning with the No.2 hits of 1960/61, followed by a grand final consisting of the 25 songs that have qualified, where we will ultimately decide what the undisputed best No.2 single of the 1960s is, and the artist of said song will, pfft, I dunno, spin in their grave probably?

1960/61: 17 songs - the last 4 songs will make the final

1962/63: 26 songs - the last 5 songs will make the final

1964/65: 23 songs - the last 5 songs will make the final

1966/67: 36 songs - the last 6 songs will make the final

1968/69: 26 songs - the last 5 songs will make the final

Right, sound the alarms in the residential home, for it’s time…to Kill or Save.

1960-61

So, first round. And…Lord God. There’s no sugar-coating it; this is the worst selection ever. I’m speechfuckingless. It’s an absolute outrage that FOUR of these will make the final. It is a mercifully small group, at least, so let’s just get it over with.

20 Cliff Richard & The Shadows — Voice In The Wilderness

20 Percy Faith — Theme From ‘A Summer Place’

I quite enjoy some of the, erm, lower quality rounds. The ranting is funny and the killing is fun :D It was a hoot getting rid of Jive Bunny in the 80s, and it will be here getting rid of the likes of Shirley and Connie whose songs sound like a fire in a pet shop.
