Can't complain too much with that winner. Maybe slightly predictable but for good reason.

This would've been my order:

  1. Mott the Hoople - All The Young Dudes (+2)
  2. The Rolling Stones - Miss You (+12)
  3. David Bowie - Sound and Vision (+5)
  4. David Bowie - Life on Mars? (-3)
  5. Bee Gees - How Deep Is Your Love (+17)
  6. The Four Tops - A Simple Game (+9)
  7. The Jam - The Eton Rifles (=)
  8. Lynn Anderson - Rose Garden (+12)
  9. Electric Light Orchestra - Don’t Bring Me Down (-4)
  10. America - A Horse With No Name (+1)
  11. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Up Around The Bend (+10)
  12. Donna Summer - Love’s Unkind (+1)
  13. Ian Dury and the Blockheads - Reasons to be Cheerful, Part 3 (+6)
  14. Lulu - The Man Who Sold The World (+4)
  15. Suzi Quatro - 48 Crash (-6)
  16. ABBA - Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) (-6)
  17. Edwin Starr - War (=)
  18. The Four Seasons - Silver Star (-2)
  19. Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street (-18)
  20. R. Dean Taylor - There’s A Ghost in My House (-16)
  21. The Wombles - Remember You’re a Womble (+3)
  22. ABBA - Money, Money, Money (-16)
  23. Van McCoy & The Soul City Symphony - The Hustle (-11)
  24. Paul McCartney & Wings - Band on the Run (-1)
  25. Carly Simon - You’re So Vain (=)

David Bowie was always the bridesmaid but never the bride in the KoS games. He usually had a song in the final, and, before this game, his best result was two back to back number 2 placements with Space Oddity & Ashes to Ashes in the 70's and 80's No.1 games, respectively.

The Deathlist forums might not be the best selling show (the most visited website?), but it has voted Life on Mars? as the best number 3 hit of the 70s. Rather fittingly, the previous winner was Murder on the Dancefloor, so now both the "Kill" and "Save" aspects of the game have been represented in a winning song, such poetry in motion that hasn't been seen since Johnny Tillotson.

The Life on Mars? single peaked at number 3 for 3 weeks in July of 1973 (a lot of 3's in that sentence!), being beaten by Slade's Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me, Peters and Lee's Welcome Home, and Gary Glitter's I'm the Leader of the Gang. Whether you like those songs or not, they're surely a saddening bore compared to the winner of this game.

Anyway, this is how the finale played out:

01 David Bowie - Life on Mars?

02 Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street

03 Mott the Hoople - All The Young Dudes

04 R. Dean Taylor - There’s A Ghost in My House

05 Electric Light Orchestra - Don’t Bring Me Down

06 ABBA - Money, Money, Money

07 The Jam - The Eton Rifles

08 David Bowie - Sound and Vision

09 Suzi Quatro- 48 Crash

10 ABBA - Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)

11 America - A Horse With No Name

12 Van McCoy & The Soul City Symphony - The Hustle

13 Donna Summer - Love’s Unkind

14 The Rolling Stones - Miss You

15 The Four Tops - A Simple Game

16 The Four Seasons - Silver Star

17 Edwin Starr - War

18 Lulu - The Man Who Sold The World

19 Ian Dury and the Blockheads - Reasons to be Cheerful, Part 3

20 Lynn Anderson - Rose Garden

21 Creedence Clearwater Revival - Up Around The Bend

22 Bee Gees - How Deep Is Your Love

23 Paul McCartney & Wings - Band on the Run

24 The Wombles - Remember You’re a Womble

25 Carly Simon- You’re So Vain

(Spotify Playlist for this game)

And these were the 25 worst No. 3's of the 70s:

Cilla Black- Something Tells Me (Something’s Gonna Happen Tonight)
The Piglets- Johnny Reggae
Tony Orlando & Dawn- What Are You Doing Sunday?
Blue Mink- The Banner Man
Donny Osmond- Why
The Partridge Family- Breaking Up Is Hard To Do
Michael Jackson- Rockin’ Robin
David Cassidy- I Am a Clown/Some Kind of a Summer
Faron Young- It’s Four in the Morning
Gary Glitter- Remember Me This Way
Mac and Katie Kissoon- Sugar Candy Kisses
Peters and Lee- Don’t Stay Away Too Long
The Moments and Whatnauts- Girls
Mud- The Secrets That You Keep
Barbra Streisand- Evergreen (Love Theme from “A Star is Born”)
Showaddywaddy- When
Hank Mizell- Jungle Rock
Berni Flint- I Don’t Want to Put a Hold On You
The Barron Knights- A Taste of Aggro
Dean Friedman- Lucky Stars
Scott Fitzgerald and Yvonne Keeley- If I Had Words
Boney M.- Hooray! Hooray! It’s a Holi-Holiday
The Bellamy Brothers- If I Said You Have a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me
The Dooleys- Wanted
James Galway- Annie’s Song

Thanks to everyone for voting, I'll try to get the 80's game running soon, but I'm a bit busy at the moment, so if I take some time, that's the reason why.

With the exception of The Heebee Geebees and Lynn Anderson (for entirely different reasons), I didn't really dislike any of the finalists, but as has been mentioned some do suffer from overexposure, hence me opting for All the Young Dudes over Baker Street & Life on Mars (and Sound & Vision over LoM come to think of it).

Of the bottom 25, there are 2 or 3 there which I actually do like, but the remainder fully deserving of their positions (imo).

With the possible exception of Blue Mink, for reasons I can't even explain to myself, I'll be happier if I never hear any of those ever again. Or in fact even have to read the titles and dredge the noise, I hesitate to use the word "tune", from the depths of my memory.

Godawful garbage.

Collectively our taste is ultimately pretty good! Better than whoever bought that crap anyway.

Confess I bought Jungle Rock (in the 70s, not when it came out in the 50s) and I still quite like it, along with the Barbra Streisand song (friend of mine had it at her funeral last year).

I can tolerate 2-3 others (Blue Mink, Breaking up is hard to do and Showaddywaddy) the rest can stay in unplayed obscurity.

Jungle Rock was the only quick exit I kinda liked as well. Though I agree with it not lasting very long in a 70s game.

I remember the Moments & Whatnauts song as a euphoric summery sound, but the lyrics are a bit

Girls
I like 'em fat, I like 'em tall
Some skinny, some small
I got to get to know them all

[Chorus]
Girls
Love the things they know
Love the things they show
Got to be where they go
Pretty girls
With sunshine in their hair
The perfume that they wear
Girls are everywhere

I'd like to be on an island
With five or six of them fine ones
Even ones that ain't good lookin'
They're the ones that do the best cookin'
Give me one with a lot of money
Give me two with lots of honey
Give me three that do them freaky things
Give me four fat mamas that like to swing

[Chorus]

Super fine
Mighty fine
Sugar and spice
Everything nice

I'd like to be a magician
Then I could stop wishin'
I'd take my magic wand
And, puff, I'd have big fun
If the guys could see me
They'd swear I was Houdini
Before they could count from one to three
I'd have ten girls standing next to me

[Chorus]

Makes Ladies by Flight of the Conchords even funnier
