Let's get this down to the three-way fight we expected. Still don't get all the love for the other one.

All The Young Dudes. Bowie had finished producing two of his own albums but had a few more songs in the locker he'd written already, so gave demos out to people he thought would do them justice. Think I remember reading that Mott the Hoople, who were struggling to make a success of themselves, couldn't believe a) their luck, and b) that Bowie would give such an amazing song away.

I'll be hugely surprised if Baker St doesn't walk this. I like it well enough of course but it's almost the text book defintion of overplayed.

45 Mott the Hoople - All The Young Dudes

I like all of these, so I'm not breaking the "pick what you actually like and don't game the system" rule by swapping from Mott to Bowie direct. I'd simply rather have either of those than Baker Street which I also like. (not that anyone cares, or indeed should).

I will say, full-throatedly and in normal-sized font, that Baker Street absolutely does not deserve to win. As you say, it is one of the overplayed songs. The sax solo lends the song to adverts and stuff but that's the only notable aspect really; the rest of the song has the whiff of boiled cabbage about it.

Spoiler

Oh I do the tiny text thing because I'm a shrinking violet, I don't think my opinion matters in the least and it's a very obvious way of pointing that out *.

Either that, or supplementary information that has an outside chance of being interesting, but its somewhat off the main topic.

It doesn't mean I hold the opinion any less fervently than those in full size, merely that it likely doesn't interest most.

*Except in those instances where I get on some high horse and involve myself in slanging matches that bore everyone else shitless. Then it's in full sized fonts :P.

To be fair, it's usually to point out where somebody else is trying to tell others how to think.

Could also do shouty I suppose, just to piss people off.

Spoiler

Edit: Actually, now that I've figured out how this button works, I might use this more instead. Save people squinting at their phones maybe.

No, this is shouty:

THE BEST SONG WAS 'THERE'S A GHOST IN MY HOUSE' WHICH IS A BANGER

:D

I agree Baker Street has been overplayed, but I'd also argue Life on Mars has been too. (But lends itself to TV theme music very handily).

I can do tiny font too. Bob Holness gets too much credit for that sax solo)

Seriously, yes.

"Ghost" is a banging tune, very danceable, and while it's upbeat it's also rather melancholy because it's about missing someone, which most people can relate to.

Also not overplayed.

That was about the font, not the contents.

However, with very few exceptions I mostly like music for the tune and not the lyrics.

I don't really like the Ghost song. Saying this in small font as I've been scared into submission.

Mott is probably the least predictable winner of the three, which sells it to me more tbh. Bowie, as we all know, is class. Baker Street is normally heard being introduced by Jeremy Vine.
