More than 10 days past in 2025, and these year is slowly becoming boring as we have not seen any major death of international personalities (major Actor/Actress, major scientist, major artist, major politician)

Can

a leader like former Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade

a famous sociologist like Noam Chomsky

a famous actress like Joanne Woodward

stop hanging on to life ?

I mean, we already had one hit in the first 7 days, and we're still only on January 13th. It's far too early to judge if the year is "becoming boring" or not.

We're only twelve days into the year, there's already been a DL hit, and Jimmy Carter's death was only two weeks ago. How can you be bored already?

Yes, it would be nice from a DL perspective if big celebrities dropped dead every minute, but that is not going to happen. I wouldn't argue guys like Peter Yarrow and Sam Moore are staggeringly famous, but they're solidly B-list deaths. Certainly much better than last year when you could go for weeks with 99% of deaths being along the lines of "Edmundas Mindaugas, Lithuanian businessman" or some other Wikipedia stub.

I feel like things have been shifting a bit lately, between Carter, Le Pen, Yarrow, Black Bart… However, I wouldn’t say that just because it’s a new year, things are going to magically change. I have a feeling we’ll stay on the same trajectory as 2024 for a little while longer, but around the middle of the year, I can see everything speeding up. My guts are we won't beat 2020, but we may end up with an average 14-15 hits overall.

However, I think many lingerers and young ill celebrities will go this year.

This second hit puts the list of where it needs to be for a record breaking year but it is still behind the blistering start that last year delivered which ultimately ended in disappointment.

I think the key will be the date that the third death comes in. If you discount 2024 the earliest dates for third deaths comes in the first week of February with the average date for the third hit being 19th March.

Linda Nolan was was probably in the second tier of names this year which I think bodes well for a reasonable score but to break the record we perhaps need some of those punt names to go

Both hits being on the previous list backs up the expectation this year will see a backlog clean out after last year's massive logjam.

We are now on pace for 48 hits, which leaves just two people still alive at the end of the year. Obviously, those two will be Noah Chomsky and Nigel Starmer-Smith.

I decided to drop Linda Nolan from my personal list for this year due to being sick of her attention seeking. That's the breaks I guess.

Two hits halfway through January seems promising but it seemed like that last year as well. I do agree that most of this year's deaths will probably come from previous list names though.

Until now the list is doing well.

Probably around 16-18 hits I guess

The 2025 list is the first since 2014 that does not have a Nobel laureate on it.  They had either Jimmy Carter or Henry Kissinger, sometimes both, for any given year from 2015 to 2024.

Given their longevity and waiting a nearly decade for two hits, maybe laureates just aren't the best picks.

Out of the 6 crowdsource hits so far, the official DL has shared 2, but I wouldn't count the other 4 as misses necessarily.

  • Black Bart isn't really a deathlisty name and I'd never have expected him to make the list.
  • Plowright was one of many interchangeable nonagenarian female actors, she could have been swapped for someone like Dickinson or Novak, but that category feels more like a lucky dip than anything else.
  • Law is the first inevitable victim of last year's catastrophic list and the need to drop 19 people, it's the nature of the game and not something that was unexpected coming into 2025.
  • Yarrow feels the most like a miss, definitely could've and probably should've made it, even if he didn't get the BBC coverage almost every other UK paper did put out an obit, more worthy than certain other US picks *cough* Gates Sr *cough*.

The BBC is pretty unreliable for coverage now a days.  Lots of people don’t get a obituary anymore. Seems to depend who is on shift.

Yarrow's illness, correct me if I'm wrong, had no coverage anywhere outside of social media and the cmme probably doesn't read these forums often. I agree with you on Black Bart.

On the other hand they seem to have a thing for some niche names. I've already mentioned a year or two ago how they love African musicians and there's already been three BBC obits for those this year: Dandy Krazy, Winnie Khumalo and Teddy Osei.

Law could be considered a miss too because, unlike some who were kept, he was known to be terminally ill, even when it was something unpredictable as Alzheimer's.

But at the same time, had someone like Eastwood been dropped instead and then died the same way as Carl Reiner did while Law had survived the year people would have gone 'why was Eastwood dropped instead of [random old person who's survived the year]???'.

No BBC for Yarrow is weird because Mary Travers DID get a Beeb obit when she died, and Peter, Paul, and Mary were one of those bands where no one member was substantially more famous than the others. Though the BBC itself did decline compared to 15 years ago.

IMO the only names that can be considered "major misses" are:

  • Peter Yarrow
  • Tom Brokaw
  • Jean Marsh
  • Don King
  • Joan Plowright
  • Roberta Flack
  • Jose Mujica

and Flack is the only one whose exclusion is "unjustifiable".

Edited by polar duck
Of course Mujica!

BBC entertainment is targeted at younger people now. So if they don’t think younger people will click on it it’s not always covered. And even then some miss out.

Sport through still covers a wider range of people than the main website.

It might have been covered through on BBC TV and/or Radio without being mentioned online.

I remember hearing Mary Travers death on the television news so it was reasonably big story.

Black Bart was more popular on the DDP this year than he was for most of his actual career. Very un DLy. Plowright was a shame as she did have backers on forum but some of those you get on the list and some you don't.

Feels a bit January 2020 with a number of possibly DLy names going but they can only pick fifty.
