The Mad Hatter 1,092 Posted October 23, 2018 Sandra Day O'Connor who was the first female justice on the supreme court has announced at 88 that she has early stages dementia which, according to her doctors is possibly Alzheimer's.https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-45957543
gcreptile 10,972 Posted October 23, 2018 Hmm, I once saw a picture of her on Twitter, 2-3 years ago, already in a wheelchair. Not the strongest person anymore, I could imagine she goes down quickly. (wording?)

Nearly 2 years late to the party with this (doing some longlist research) but just for any other visitors to this page - when she retired in 2005, it wasn't due to personal ill health (although she was interested in retiring). Her husband had Alzheimer's and she wanted to care for him until he passed - he died in 2009. Her retirement was actually delayed due to the death of Chief Justice Rehnquist from cancer around the same time. John Roberts was nominated for O'Connor's Associate Justice slot and ended up as Chief instead! After her husband's death, I think she did lead a relatively healthy and lively retirement until recent years. So this isn't just a history lesson, and since her thread is lacking in any detail about her condition, she survived breast cancer in the late 80s and in late 2018 announced she was withdrawing public life due to a diagnosis of dementia, possibly Alzheimer's (like her husband). https://www.npr.org/2018/10/23/659816933/sandra-day-oconnor-says-she-has-dementia-withdraws-from-public-life
dimreaper 697 Posted December 5, 2021 I think the committee should strongly consider her for the 2022 list. She can't be in great shape at this point.
Sir Creep 7,070 Posted December 5, 2021 I honestly thought her dead, and wondered why tf her thread was bumped. I guess I should have posted in another thread lol. SC

It’s been a good week for my top 50…Carter, Kissinger and O’Connor all hits. Sadly too far down the list for DDP success but Jimmy is still offering…
