Body Snatcher 44 107 Posted November 16, 2009 I don't know how reliable the Russian news paper The Sun is but it had this to say about the "other white meat" (story via the Harald Sun) Also a bit off topic here - but you Brits might get a kick out of this. But don't worry I still love you

VSBfromH 74 Posted March 17, 2010 WTF?!!! "Mooing cattle rustler dies" My favourite part of the article: "Nzube was arrested in Ngoma Village, under chief Marupi, in a police operation code-named Inkomo Wazithatha Ngaphi (Where Did You Get The Cattle?)". Bonkers! Another reason why Zimbabwe doesn't feature on my list of planned holiday destinations.
maryportfuncity 10,662 Posted March 17, 2010 Re Zimbabwe and holidays, I don't know if advertising and marketing courses still recount the following tale but..... For a few years when students were prepared for interviews in advertising they were warned they would be asked to discuss examples of highly unsuccessful campaigns. Obviously, this could be dangerous if you inadvertantly criticised a campaign by the company interviewing you, but there was always a safe answer and one example trotted out in such interviews was Rhodesia's attempts to market itself to tourists during the final years of white minority rule. Under the slogan 'Rhodesia is Super' they had a poster campaign of big game animals you might see on safari and a little logo of an elephant with a flag in its trunk. It didn't boost tourism, mainly because the whole world associated the place with living in denial about political realities and the campaign was perceived as more self-denial about life's realities. Potentially, it's a tourist destination to rival any on the planet. But, not this year, eh?

Monoclinic 39 Posted July 30, 2010 Disabled man eaten to death by maggots. Not sure I'd be keen on that as my preferred way to go. In case like me you were slightly disappointed that your medical knowledge had not been enriched, I found a similar story with a photo and the prescribed course of action, fly spray. Please don't look if you are about to eat or have just eaten.

The event, which has been running since 1999, requires participants to withstand 110C for as long as possible. Lobster thermidore anyone? No, 110 C, not F. At least that's what nu.nl claims. That's a Dutch language news site and the Fahrenheit scale has been out of use for more than a century here. [mode=geek] BTW, as long as the air is very dry and you drink lots of water, you can stand such a temperature for a remarkably long time. The operative words here are enthalpy of vaporisation. Letting water (read: sweat) evaporate from the body is a very effective way of cooling. The heat it takes to evaporate water is equal to five times the amount of heat it takes to get the same amount of water from freezing to boiling. VSBfromH 74 Posted September 1, 2010 Woman gets stuck in chimney trying to enter the home of her boyfriend "A woman who attempted to sneak into her lover's home by sliding down the chimney was found dead in the flue. Dr Jacquelyn Kotarac's decomposing body was discovered three days later after smells came from the fireplace. The 49-year-old had apparently failed to get into the man's house through the door before she climbed on to the roof. She removed the chimney cap and slid down feet first. Her lover is said to have already left to avoid a confrontation."
