maryportfuncity 10,639 Posted May 15, 2007 Professor Philip Collins, dead a few days now but just spotted it in the paper. Without whom....Dickens would be more of a dickhead in critical circles.

To the handful who venture from the CUFC boards to here it might be worth knowing the deceased is Mark Nunn, that rarity, a well-liked and respected doorman, from Yates' Wine Lodge in the city. Brinsworth House Baiter 12 Posted May 15, 2007 Professor Philip Collins, dead a few days now but just spotted it in the paper. Without whom....Dickens would be more of a dickhead in critical circles. I've never heard of the bloke, but an interesting article nonetheless. Although I would dispute the fact that Collins would have made that much difference to the longetevity of Dickens' works. Surely he'd been immortalised by the 1950's? I mean, I'd heard of & read him by the late seventies & I didn't need some poncy professor's recommendation. God, how I loathe these upper class intellectuals who think literature is their sole reserve. The bastards. I suspect the only reason some of them didn't lavish acclaim on Dickens was because his work satirised their fat, I'm all right Jack as I step over the common peasants on the way to my club cosy existence & mentality. Did I mention they're bastards? Cheers, BHB
maryportfuncity 10,639 Posted May 15, 2007 BHB, yer man Collins made an important contribution if only in applying the then favoured critical methods to Dickens and throwing a metaphorical cat in the pigeon coop by proving CD had a technique of comparable complexity to the current critical concerns, or summat. Also, with the wall to wall emergence of new unis, ie ex-Polys twenty odd years back Dickens kinda played to their crowd, and got on many a syllabus. What, with the students in those unis being - like - more working class and that. Did you see the note about possible Dickie O'Sullivan action on the Brinsworth House thread? All second hand news when I get it, but - allegedly - more than mere rumour, or summat.

I've always admired metaphorical cat throwing, although not nearly as much as literal cat throwing, even during my non-polytechic years. I did see your note about possible Dick action on the Brinsworth House thread, but will wait for actual confirmation before I break out the bunting, flags & demand the event be instilled as a national Bank Holiday. I've had far too many diappointments of late to get overly excited over possible Dick rising. (Are two lame Dick double entendres enough to upset the Windsor's sensibilities or should I go for a third?) Stirling work though, Mary, concerning the possiblity of our favourite Dick possibly making another splash on the hallowed floors of celebritydom. There, three should do it. Why couldn't it have been musician Philip Collins? You mean Genesis' own Professor of pop? Anyway the former Lancashire cricketer Peter Marner has died at the age of 71. As well as being the youngest ever player to represent his county, he was also the first player ever to win a Man of the Match award in a one-day game. He's probably too busy looking for the next woman he'll have to pay millions of pounds to for putting up with him for 5 years. From the Peter Marner article: "He was also the first person to win a limited-overs Man-of-the-Match award, and the first two score a hundred" When people can't even spell the word "to" correctly, one really must despair at the levels of education in 21st century Britain. Cowboy Ronnie 78 Posted May 17, 2007 Alfred Collins, London's longest-serving cab driver, has died aged 92: Which makes two Collins in two days. If the "these things happen in threes" people are correct, who will be next? The aforementioned Genesis slaphead Phil? Screen giant Joan or her smutwriting sister Jackie? "Now that we've come this far why don't you wait in the space ship" astronaut Michael? "A Girl Like You" singer and general oddball Edwyn? Lots of fun choices out there, though sadly none seem likely to complete the hat trick.

Lots of fun choices out there, though sadly none seem likely to complete the hat trick. (edit) From his Myspace... Monday, May 07, 2007 Only the Lonely Hello old friends. That's a good title isn't it just? I may be thinking about it, you see, loneliness. Sometimes I do feel lonely but I can cope with it. Sometimes I'm pondering on life's diversities. But I'm definitely with it. I'm impatient now. To get on with it. So. My record is coming in early autumn, whoopee. That is very good news. I'll maybe play a concert or two. I hope so. I practice singing every day. To get better. Cheerio and love, Edwyn. Marvellous

Lots of fun choices out there, though sadly none seem likely to complete the hat trick. I hope not Edwyn - quite like him. Also, Joan can be quite entertaining, and I'm sure she's got a few more years in her yet, as has her sis. There's Pauline "Shirley Valentine" Collins, who would be a rank outsider at only 66 years old. Even more so Mary Cathleen Collins, better known as Bo Derek, who is only 50. Michelle "Cindy from Eastenders" Collins is 44 later this month and has had problems with anorexia in the past. Certainly has proved to be a decent TV actress (unlike others!) since she left Albert Square. Another one with a birthday this month is Lewis Collins, who will be 61. Then there's John D Collins, aged 64, who played Flying Officer Fairfax in "Allo Allo". Someone who tends to provoke a "love him or hate him" reaction (so might be a popular choice with those in the latter category) is Frank Skinner, whose birth name was Christopher Graham Collins. Only turned 50 this year though. Musician "Bootsy" Collins "Legendary funk bass guitarist and composer" is only 55.
