msc 18,477 Posted August 4, 2016 The 1966 World Cup final is 2-2 in terms of fatalities, iirc. (Ball, Moore; Haller, Emmerich). Makes me wonder who will be the sole survivor, eventually. Also makes me wonder how other World Cup finals are doing in that regards. A list might be in the offing.

Also makes me wonder how other World Cup finals are doing in that regards. A list might be in the offing. You could probably find the lists for '50-58 somewhere in the World Cup topic. ( https://forums.deathlist.net/topic/8273-fifa-world-cup-players ) All players that played in the first Maracanazo (unofficial final of 1950, although it was a round-robin contest) are now dead. Last to die was the scorer of the decisive second Uruguayan goal, Alcides Ghiggia one year ago (16 July 2015) at 88. Some German players from the 1954 final (Hans Schäfer, Horst Eckel) are still alive. Many players from 1958 are still alive, e.g. Pelé was only 18 17 when they won that match (12 years might be the longest wait between the first and the second last World Cup wins (he won 3, though he played a minor part in 1962 due to his injury). msc 18,477 Posted August 5, 2016 I think there's only 3 Brazilians alive from 1958 - Pele, Zagallo and someone I'm forgetting at 1am. A google suggests Zito and he died last year, so 2 it is.

Yes, only two Brazilians, but the Swedes also played in that final. And the Swedish healthcare system seems to have been better than the Brazilian. Sigge Parling, Bengt Gustavsson, Reino Börjesson, Kurt Hamrin and Agne Simonsson are all alive from the Swedish team.

It is saying something interesting though. He was a BIG centre half who used his head to score and clear the ball so he nutted more hard leather balls than most of that squad, including the clear dementia cases now. Suggesting, maybe, there were more active brain cells in his head than you'd find inside the skull of most footballers. That isn't saying much, though.
Arsewipe 202 Posted August 5, 2016 Jack Charlton is in the early stages of Alzheimers according to a relative of mine who spoke to him recently.
Deathrace 1,171 Posted August 5, 2016 Of the boys of 66 you can never tell who'll be the last one standing but Roger Hunt and Geoff Hurst look to be in the best shape of those still going. On the German side, Beckenbauer might be a decent bet to be the last man standing as he was I think the youngest player in the final.

Sean 6,329 Posted August 5, 2016 Jack Charlton is in the early stages of Alzheimers according to a relative of mine who spoke to him recently. Not unexpected given his memory problems. With many of his contemporaries in the late stages he will probably see them out.Would be funny if Jack and Bobby were the last two standing.Hurst would be my bet for last man standing though. msc 18,477 Posted August 5, 2016 Sods law it wont be one of the bigger names, so I'm going to guess George Cohen will wind up outlasting the rest. Though I could see Beckenbauer outliving the lot.

True.I suppose they would still find some evidence of damage that isnt age related.
