I've always wondered who the oldest person to vote in the US (or anywhere, really) actually was...

Marita Camacho Quiros (former First Lady of Costa Rica) voted in the April 2022 presidential election at the age of 111. I’m not sure if she’s the oldest to ever vote but definitely up there

Gertrude Baines voted for Obama when she was 114, and attempts to explain why here:

A little light on the explanation, but I guess I'll take it. Obama almost certainly has to be the last president someone born before 1900 voted for in that case. Could be not terribly long before we get a president who's the last one to get a vote from someone who was born before World War I, maybe even this November. Assuming any of them left actually vote... Two men and a handful more women.

(To tie it back to good old Dick, the last American man who could have actually voted for Lincoln would have died when Dick was in his 40s or 50s depending on how accurate you believe verification to be, similar with anyone alive during Lincoln's term. So he very well could have met people who voted for Lincoln as a young man.)

According to Deadline “I can’t remember what I had for breakfast… but my long-term memory is only getting better.” Couldn't remember what it was like to work on Mary Poppins Returns (which was filmed about 7 years ago), but otherwise seems to be in really good shape. Even that memory issue seems to be somewhat inconsistent, and he is apparently otherwise interested in continuing work.

Here is the full interview, referenced in the post above by Comped. He seems fine, still very upbeat, and is staying physically active. I think anyone is going to have at least some mild short term memory loss at 98. Not the worst DL pick though, I plan on keeping him on my shadowlists from here on simply due to actuarial odds at that age.

He seems very astute about the industry as well, arguably something more may want to pay attention to. His whole comment about different categories of actors was fascinating!

Some pictures from the Daytime Emmys. He looks about the same condition as before.

Despite his age, a wasted pick this year and next. If Glynis Johns could make 100, why can't Dick Van Dyke, especially considering he is a year and a half away, still goes to the gym regularly, dances, and has just won an Emmy.

Should be left alone until 2026, a feeling he will be a 2027 hit.

CBS must be regretting giving him a 98th birthday special, thinking he'd be dead by now... Guess they have to pull a Betty White and keep doing them for years!

I was recently in Danville, Illinois, and came across this mural of famous people from the town. Strange coincidence that two DLers both have roots in a small town in Eastern Illinois. There was also a bit of a DVD worship going on in all the businesses in the downtown area, with shrine-like collections of DVD merch.

Made an appearance at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards on September 7th, which is referenced in this article. A video inside the article shows him answering questions from reporters. He mentions that he is still looking for work, but I would note that he sounds/looks a bit frailer than recent appearances. Speaks a bit on his life and what he wants to be remembered for.

Get the man an Oscar already...

Shite camera and audio doesn't help his cause. Probably recorded on a phone.

I mean he's nearly 100. Regardless of how active he's been lately, he can hardly be expected to maintain a full schedule.

Maybe he wanted to get some rest. Or find some more work on the internet. Or find memes on Reddit about himself. (I think he'd be the kind of person to enjoy that.) Not a huge deal - people skip ceremonies all the time, even when presenting.

I disagree. DvD doesn't strike me as the type to bow out willingly. Given his recent frail appearance at an award ceremony a week ago...

Could be nothing, but I'm starting to think he might be a hit before J. Carter or N. Chomsky. ((Jinx?))

Honestly, Carter outliving him would not surprise me one bit at this point.

Did look frailer than usual here. He seemed to be gasping for air…
