The Mali vs Angola match at the African Cup of Nations produced a poor result for one UK based punter yesterday. Angola were leading 4-0 with only 15 minutes left to play, so a bright spark decided to place a sizable wager of £4400 that Angola would go on to win the match, if they had done so, he would have made a profit of £44. Of course Mali then scored four goals in the last eleven minutes to secure a draw, thereby depriving the hapless gambler of his savings.

(Nice to see his mates being so sympathetic)

DDT - you of all people, being had like that! - coming from you I viewed it with less suspicion. I was then fully taken in too, just by the steam roller effect continuing for so long.

So sad - but then all good things?

2.05 Sizing Europe

2.40 Bensalem

Don't forget to take an extra shirt, and have a Guinness or seven on me.

Yours ever,

AP Shanks

So how did it all go for Longodds-shanks?

1.30 Dubguib (General Miller e/w) Menora

2.05 Sizing Europe 6-1

2.40 Bensalem Chief Dan George

3.20 Medermit Binocular

4.00 Garde Champetre A New Story

4.40 Quevega 6-4f

s_de7774726fb4e674358b78460fa94bc7.jpg

2/6....

So if i had put a fiver on each, I would have staked £30 (ignoring the e/w General Miller) - lost £20 on four races, but win £47.50 (including original stake) - £27.50 up...

Pity I didn't put any money on then....

Profit-making punters were thin on the ground yesterday and the bookies needed strong arms to carry out their cases of cash, so thanks Shanks. The atmosphere was as subdued as I've ever seen it at the festival, but the weather was gorgeous.

Armitage is indisposed after a heavy night but he asked me to mention Mobaasher, Finian's Rainbow, Long Run and Deutschland for today.

I think I overtook Ginger McCain on th M5 today. It seems likely as the number plate read 'R80 RUM' and it turned off at Cheltenham.

He could be a possible for a forthcoming list. Maybe in a couple more years, though.

I think you'll find that's £37.50 won, plus £10 stakes returned, less £30 initial stake which leaves you £17.50 up...

(still a reasonable return mind!)

I wish I'd stick to my instincts. Today, me and my work colleague went to the bookies. He put an each way on Mon Mome (incredibily at 100/1, doesn't anyone know he won the Grand National only last year?). I looked at the list and the name Imperial Commander stared back at me and my initial thought was "hmmm, that's got a Gold Cup-winning ring about it" and the promptly did sweet FA about it. (I had less than a tenner and was more concerned at procuring the vinyl copy of The Teardrop Explodes classic 1981 album "Wilder" from Rockaboom). I could have got that AND Primal Scream's "Sonic Flower Groove" record with plenty to spare had I let gut instinct take over...

Imperial Commander was my first winner since Tuesday, though I didn't have too much on it.

Oh yes, the Derby. As also-ran disco band Midnight Star once proclaimed, it has to be the 'Midas Touch'.

A story to warm the cockles - a chap has won the £1.5m Tote jackpot by picking all six winners (2/1, 12/1, 16/1, 16/1, 5/1 and 12/1) at Exeter today. The final winner hadn't won in its last 28 attempts and its female jockey had never ridden a winner before.

Not bad for a £2 bet.

Not only that, but he got into the meeting on a free ticket, had never had a go on the Jackpot before, and to cap it all, he ripped up his original bet as it came to £32 and he thought that was too much!

My dear fellow, Silver By Nature is a grey with an excellent chance, having won a good trial at Haydock recently. But beware, no grey has triumphed since Nicolaus Silver in 1961.

Another grey is Character Building whom I'll probably put my dough on...

<---- My £7 stake money will be placed on the nose of "lucky" number 7 - which ever horse that maybe!

I guess it will come in 7th...
