Herve Filion was, for many years, the winningest harness racer who ever steered a sulky. He came in first 15,179 times in 82,336 starts, and held the record for most wins in a year, 814, set in 1989.  Filion, who would have won even more races were it not for a seven-year suspension beginning in the mid-1990s, died on June 22 at a hospital in Mineola, N.Y. He was 77. The cause was complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

I met Ron Turcotte at the Belmont this year. Seems to be in good health, even after almost 40 years of being paralyzed. Gave him a tip on the first race... :P

Martin Molony, three time winning jockey in the Irish Grand National, winner of the 1951 Cheltenham Gold Cup and Irish Champion Jockey seven years in a row between 1945 and 1951, dead at 92. His career was over by the age of 26 due to injury, which makes it all the more impressive a CV.

Penny Chenery, an American horse breeder, has died aged 95. She notably bred Secretariat, who won the Triple Crown in 1973 - a DDP pick.

I didn't think you were allowed to pick animals for the DDP :P

Multiple sources are reporting the death of horse racing magnate Beverly Lewis

Beverly and her husband Bob campaigned four classic winners from 1995-2000. The Lewises were Kentucky Derby winners in 1997 with Silver Charm. Charismatic followed suit in 1999.

Beverly passed away on October 20 after a long illness. She was 90 years old. She is preceded in death by her husband, who passed away in 2006.
