A REFEREE has died in hospital in Mexico after being attacked by a player he red-carded during a match.  Jose Valdemar Hernandez Capetillo lost his fight for life after spending a week in a coma.

He was rushed unconscious to hospital in Xalapa, the capital city of the eastern Mexico State of Veracruz, on December 24 after being assaulted by a player from amateur side Guadalajara during a match in the city’s PEMEX - El Castillo stadium.  He died in the early hours of yesterday.

Great first hit for me - all I need is a qualifying obit.

Antonio Valentín Angelillo dead at 80. Played international football for both Argentina and Italy, but didn't make the World Cup for either. Serie A top scorer in 1959 and later went on to manage the Moroccan national team.

I think he was the Morocco manager in 89 when they just needed to win 2 matches to qualify for  a playoff for Italy 1990, and failed to win both, missing out by 2 points. If so, some folk are just destined not to make the World Cup!

Furthest back Capocannoniere (Serie A top scorers) still living are now:

Gino Pivatelli (1956, Bologna)

Dino da Costa (1957, Roma)*

Sergio Brighenti (1961, Sampdoria)*

José Altafini (1962, Milan)

Pedro Manfredini (1963, Roma)*

Asterisked players never made it to a World Cup.

Aw man, I'll admit now my screen saver is the "legends" line up of Carlisle United (i.e. the squad that spent four days on top of the whole football league - exactly where Man City are today) and McCartney's in that line up. Sad.

Nigel Sims, English goalkeeper who played for Wolverhampton Wanderers (1948-1956), Aston Villa (1956-1964) and Peterborough United (1964-1965), has reportedly died aged 86.

A 2nd hit for me, but could also be obit-less.

Being 86 isn't a reason to pick him, and I ain't finding anything re: health.  What was your insight on this one?  Agreed, fab pick.

Local to Villa, fan for years...see lots of the old boys stuff & none of them are spring chickens, so I thought it was worth filling a team of oldies.

Some of them will be obscure as proven with Sims & Alan Deakin who died just before him, with no QO at the moment, yet this Ted Phillips guy gets 2!  I can live in hope.

Further to the Tommy Lawrence thing:

Two years ago aged 74 he seems blissfully dementia free and just a bit modest about it all despite 8 million people seeing his interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVYQvOt64GE

Tommy Lawrence has died, aged 77.

Edit: BBC obit
