"Ossignur! Totò Schillaci l'è 'l gran visir de tücc i terun!"

(A popular Italian sketch of the 90s parodizing Lega Nord, the meaning is "Oh, my God! Totò Schillaci is the grand vizier of all southerners!")

The wording ("he is monitored day and night by an equipe of doctors") is ominous. Other sources report he has been battling cancer for years.

EDIT: was diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer in early 2022.

Worth remembering that he was present when Matteo Messina Denaro was arrested, and I always wondered what he was doing at a cancer treatment clinic. Suppose we have our answer now.

George Burley having (unspecified type and stage) cancer is an interesting one, as he's approaching 70 and has been an alcoholic for large chunks of his life. Remember Christophe Daum, one to watch imo.

It sounds fairly serious by the way it was announced and the statements.

Schillaci's case is puzzling.

Initial reports stated he was very close to death with terminal cancer. The denial by the family was very weak ("he is stable and monitored all day and night"). It was breaking first page news on all Italian major outlets, so you'd think he'd have a few days left at best.

Then reports came out he is actually hospitalised for a minor cardiac issue, or for pneumonia. According to the latest news he is improving decisively and they are withdrawing oxygen. Everyone now says the initial situation was greatly exaggerated. It is not even clear if his cancer is actually terminal.

I still think he is fucked, but maybe not soon as I thought.

One thing is for sure if he makes it to '25, he'll once again be in for Gianluca Vialli, this time on dead pool teams rather than the pitch.

Saudi Arabian Fahad Al-Muwallad (wikihospitalised in ICU after "falling off" a balcony.

Condition is unclear, but he is quite a big name in his country and would immediately  QO.

Liked this from his Wiki about his 2018 World Cup:

However, his performance in the World Cup was considered to be a deep disappointment, due to his incapability and his silence in important moments

Not selected in 2022 due to doping allegations...

VAR decision: Speedie onside, sadly. Shaw was a terrific player and could have had a fine England career but for injury. RIP.

Tibor Szabo, who sounds like one of those foreign imports that had an unsuccessful fling with lower football league clubs, but was actually a Yorkshireman through and through died last week, after collapsing when cycling.

Played 13 times for Bradford City and then had spells in the North West for Macclesfield, Accrington and Morecambe, amongst others. https://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/sport/24560940.ex-bantams-player-tibor-szabo-well-known-local-game/

A Palermitan in Messina, a southerner in Turin, an Italian in Japan, had all of his best matches in a three-week period, brother stole tyres for a living, did a shit tonne of ecstasy and then made bank off adverts. Definitely a life well lived.
