Monoclinic 39 Posted September 4, 2009 Baroness Nicky Chapman has died aged 48. Also, the BBC news ticker is reporting the death of Keith Waterhouse (author) aged 80. If you hadn't slipped the Baroness in we could have all hoped for a significant Simon Cowell fancier death, Nicki Chapman. Who I think finds herself in the annoying camp, though on a scale of 1 to Katona to be fair she probably falls somewhere near the bottom.
Toast 16,137 Posted September 4, 2009 Keith Waterhouse has died at the age of 80 That's a shame, he wrote some very funny stuff (if not recently). The first book I remember making me laugh out loud was "Billy Liar".

The first book I remember making me laugh out loud was "Billy Liar". Shame he turned into a right-wing old bore, but then they all do in the end... I think it might have been some kind of illness because he wrote his last article for the Daily Maul a few weeks ago and it was promoted as such.

time 8,599 Posted September 5, 2009 Perhaps all will become clear if I explain that the late Mr Waterhouse was founder and Life President of AAAA - The Association for the Annihilation of the Aberrant Apostrophe, hence he devoted a good many columns highlighting the idiocy of the "Greengrocer's apostrophe" - Orange's and Apple's rather than Oranges and Apples - and its derivatives, thus I though it appropriate he receive "flower's" rather than "flowers". Google 'Waterhouse AAAA' for many examples of his fine work.

Star Crossed 33 Posted September 6, 2009 Never heard of Ali Bongo... unless, of course, you are talking about this shop. What an excellent find. I wonder how many have inadvertently discovered it while seeking information on the late Mr Bongo. I was talking to someone about the Gabon election last week. After a little giggling fit over the likely winner's name, we were wondering who'd get the most hits on Google. I typed ali bongo into Google...The results. For those who don't like clicking on links, Gabon's newly-"elected" President comes first. Then the afore-mentioned head shop. Then the magician. For those of us with a bent for putting Zealot/Despots/Dictators/Guerilla Leaders/Freedom Fighters in our deadpools, Ali looks a decent candidate for a mysterious helicopter crash in 2010. Whitehouse 872 Posted September 6, 2009 Close call!! This morning Dutch teletext reported the death of writer Harry Mulisch. Turned out the editors of TT made a major goof! He ain't dead, but since they prepaired for it some expect him to die in the near future.
honez 79 Posted September 6, 2009 ... though on a scale of 1 to Katona to be fair she probably falls somewhere near the bottom. Not being a slave to the tabloids and suffering the tyranny of distance, I still have no idea who Katona is, but from various mentions around these parts I suspect, in this case, ignorance is bliss. I fully intend to keep it that way.

time 8,599 Posted September 8, 2009 Australian actor Ray Barrett has died aged 82. Not the most familiar name but he's done loads of work in UK TV, from voicing Thunderbirds and Stingray to appearances in Colditz, Dixon of Dock Green and The Saint, amongst others. DevonDeathTrip 2,358 Posted September 11, 2009 News was received on the long weekend that Larry Gelbart, the prolific comedy writer, director, and producer known most famously for M*A*S*H, fell gravely ill just before the holidays from a massive stroke, leaving him incapacitated. Sadly, doctors are telling kin that hopes for a recovery are slim, and its probably a matter of weeks. His pals Alan Alda and Woody Allen were among the first callers to hospital, desperately in search of information. Larry’s last public appearance was in Beverly Hills earlier this month when he finally received a long-deserved due, being inducted into the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame. His many other credits include Sid Caesar’s Show of Shows, Tootsie, Oh God, and Blame It On Rio in an award- winning career spanning film, TV, and Broadway. Larry Gelbart, who turned 80 last February, was also a contributing blogger at Huffington Post, though that has been infrequent this year. And he has not posted in a while on the alt.tv.mash Usenet group, where he has always been a welcome and hilarious presence. Gelbart's last post on alt.tv.mash appears to have been made at 11:08 this morning. Between this and the strange word use in the guest's post, I don't think this was originally released by even the most amateur of news organizations. Although if one's going to create a deathwatch hoax in late December, kudos for choosing someone as obscure and unlikely as Larry Gelbart. The hoax, which didn't originate on DL, has made the papers. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/culturemon...y-gelbarts.html It's a shame that the story was revealed to be hoax, because Larry Gelbart has just died. Are you in tune with my brainwaves today Devon? I was only reading about Larry Gelbart and M*A*S*H earlier this evening... Gelbart was one of the great influences of contemporary comedy. It's a shame his passing didn't get more mainstream coverage in the media, especially since he's the force behind some of the greatest and most well known works of comedy including the TV series M*A*S*H, the comedy classic Tootsie, and the musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. n

Octopus of Odstock 2,194 Posted September 14, 2009 Couldn't remember if there was a seperate thread for Hi-De-Hi, but Felix Bowness has died at the age of 87 Damn damn damn damn damn He was firmly in the top 10 of my DDP list for next year. I knew he was struggling & thought he'd be worth a good bet. Mind, he was older than I thought he was - I had a feeling he was born in 1931, so maybe it's not all bad..... Shame though - my uncle's dad knew him quite well & always said what a nice chap he was.
