If you hadn't slipped the Baroness in we could have all hoped for a significant Simon Cowell fancier death, Nicki Chapman. Who I think finds herself in the annoying camp, though on a scale of 1 to Katona to be fair she probably falls somewhere near the bottom.

Perhaps all will become clear if I explain that the late Mr Waterhouse was founder and Life President of AAAA - The Association for the Annihilation of the Aberrant Apostrophe, hence he devoted a good many columns highlighting the idiocy of the "Greengrocer's apostrophe" - Orange's and Apple's rather than Oranges and Apples - and its derivatives, thus I though it appropriate he receive "flower's" rather than "flowers".

What an excellent find. I wonder how many have inadvertently discovered it while seeking information on the late Mr Bongo.

I was talking to someone about the Gabon election last week. After a little giggling fit over the likely winner's name, we were wondering who'd get the most hits on Google. I typed ali bongo into Google...The results.

 

For those who don't like clicking on links, Gabon's newly-"elected" President comes first. Then the afore-mentioned head shop. Then the magician.

Turned out the editors of TT made a major goof! He ain't dead, but since they prepaired for it some expect him to die in the near future.

comedy writer, director, and producer known most famously for M*A*S*H,

fell gravely ill just before the holidays from a massive stroke,

leaving him incapacitated. Sadly, doctors are telling kin that hopes

Alan Alda and Woody Allen were among the first callers to hospital,

desperately in search of information. Larry’s last public appearance

was in Beverly Hills earlier this month when he finally received a

long-deserved due, being inducted into the Academy of Television Arts

and Sciences Hall of Fame. His many other credits include Sid Caesar’s

Show of Shows, Tootsie, Oh God, and Blame It On Rio in an award-

winning career spanning film, TV, and Broadway.

 

Larry Gelbart, who turned 80 last February, was also a contributing

blogger at Huffington Post, though that has been infrequent this year.

And he has not posted in a while on the alt.tv.mash Usenet group,

where he has always been a welcome and hilarious presence.

 

 

Gelbart's last post on alt.tv.mash appears to have been made at 11:08 this morning. Between this and the strange word use in the guest's post, I don't think this was originally released by even the most amateur of news organizations.

 

Although if one's going to create a deathwatch hoax in late December, kudos for choosing someone as obscure and unlikely as Larry Gelbart.

 

The hoax, which didn't originate on DL, has made the papers.

Gelbart was one of the great influences of contemporary comedy. It's a shame his passing didn't get more mainstream coverage in the media, especially since he's the force behind some of the greatest and most well known works of comedy including the TV series M*A*S*H, the comedy classic Tootsie, and the musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. n
