Lord Fellatio Nelson 6,219 Posted November 1, 2009 So, what brings him back, dumped by a dwarf or released from the facility? Anyone hazard a guess? Winner gets free pizza. Publicising a return is just as obnoxious as announcing a retirement. He probably breached his restraining order. Come on Winny, you missed him, didnt you!! Lord Fellatio Nelson 6,219 Posted November 1, 2009 Are we ready to put on our reading glasses? Ahha. The veteran journalist liked to quietly feast on his sausage while writing by candlelight near the midnight hour. The concept of work first and play later never seemed to register in his psyche. Godot's thoughts seemed to be memories rather than anything of the now and his viewpoint of all things made him seem like that of a weathered individual, someone who only speaks the language of the past. He remembered the days when they only sold records, the days where game shows ruled television and when comic books were for the ultra creative outcast. He missed people and he missed conversations too. But despite the fact that Godot's life was falling into a mid-life depression, he found a place that he could call home somewhere down the road of obscurity itself. There he arrived at the scene of Deathlist.net, a place where he could speak freely about squid and the pattern of the bricks. Godot died back on the 28th after a few sips of what was originally thought to be lemonade. He seemed in good spirits and encouraged reform. He also set up a folding table and poured several cups of what was believed to be the same lemonade for all the other members of the forum. Is he a hero or a coward? "Man, I can never tell". My thoughts: I did not neglect to read Godot's sensible complaint about lack of circulation and how the interest in DL seems to have gone cold. I admit that some of his complaints were responsible for driving me away from posting. Too many birthday greetings, too many double posts by "spammers", too many posts left unanswered. Obituary hunters running wild and the essential personality's of the forum seem to have faded out to Facebook or twitter or somewhere that I believe to be fake, places that I've seldom gone and have never been a fan of. Wherever they may have went, they (or most of them) are certainly not investing anything creative\informative\entertaining out here where morbid media burns bright. Godot found what's inside himself on Deathlist.net and that's emptiness. Is he all alone? Maybe the reader should ask himself\herself that question. But hope survives where emptiness dwells. Godot is like the maniac on the street with all the answers but so wacked out that he can never put anything into motion. The feel Godot gives off reminds me of a character in the film "Rescue Dawn" named Gene DeBruin, who was basically kept prisoner for much too long. After finally agreeing to escape, he ignored the plot in which he agreed on with all the other prisoners. When Dieter confronts him and says "Where the fu-ck were you?' Gene simply just wanders off in his own little world, finally free but showing absolutely no sympathy for the others. Godot's like him in a way, he tells us what he misses and what he wants, but selfishly chooses to fade away instead of making it happen. Godot's latest manifestation isn't showing dignity and it's certainly not showing anyone respect, it's borderline pathetic, it's a dreamer who chose suicide, that's what it is. If you want to make this forum a better place you should make quality contributions on a consistent basis and try to spell check what you have posted. Keep it real, keep it interesting, keep it raw. Nobody is perfect but it's the effort which counts. I think we need more 'real" on Deathlist. I often feel that everyone here is like a bunch of estranged neighbors who wave artificially but simply continue to live here for their own selfish\deceptive reasons. It almost reminds me of a wealthy neighborhood in suburban New Jersey. Now don't get me wrong, keeping it real shouldn't be about persuading others to crack one liners about private parts. How's it going Ms. Bazarr? I read what Star Crossed wrote, he said that he's alone, that he's very alone. Star Crossed's alone just like Godot was. The attack stooped at a low level but at least he made a solid point. I believe that freedom of speech is the best way of communicating for all intended purposes but that doesn't mean you should exploit yourself in the most vulgar and most classless way possible. Show some respect for others and yourself. It makes sense. Even if you have never done it before. Final thoughts on Godot: Godot was one of the few regular posters who actually possessed some form of writing talent (besides Señor Honez and a few others). I liked the way he opened up a post: Dorothy Parker was told of the death of the famously taciturn US President Calvin Coolidge, she replied: "How can they tell?" for example. Godot himself was a thinker, one who never felt discouraged to exercise the mind. A strong vocabulary and a hunger for debate, the elder statesman never backed down. I always thought he was very full of himself though and that his ignorance came alive when ever a debate did. There is a saying "I'm from Missouri - prove me wrong" and that should be written in bold on Godot's gravestone. Anybody who denies the moon landing's is living in their own world, it's either that or maybe I've been living in my own world all this time. I admit that in a sense Godot reminded me of myself, in fact, we may have even shared the same taste in women. What aggravates me the most is that he decided to lay down and die like a coward. If you hate to see something die and you choose death, that means you have given in. I dare someone to tell me that I'm wrong. "That's defeatist talk" Godot once cried and with his recent complaint it's obvious one can never win with words like that. But Godot has forever worn the mask of a hypocrite, somebody who sits in endless doubt and memorizes his post count like a wedding anniversary. Post count (to him) translated to cholesterol and in some way it actually did. I mean we should post consciously but let's all be honest with ourselves. Do you know why you care? Already I can hear the cheers and the screams, a very mixed reaction but I hear somebody telling me to go way. But the truth hurts doesn't it? Godot cares about his post count because it represents the deterioration of his life. It's over - so he thinks. He doesn't believe in his life anymore, this kept him for a while, but he was ashamed of it. Deathlist must have never been a hobby but instead some form of distraction. None of this has ever really been about death or being friendly. I'm afraid that I can't tell you what the rest is about, Godot will have to go make an appointment with a specialist: like the bathroom mirror for example. In the end, all I know is that his demise proves his insecurities and his selfishness. His loss will definitely leave a void on this forum, even if it's a void that we pretend is not there. Goodnight Nick Clooney. Between life and death there is the other place that you'll be, it'll be here on the nights that you can't sleep. Snacking on unusual fruit and reading in the silence. I apologize for making a post at such a great length. I don't plan on doing it again. Almost 7 months .. I needed my fix. I hope everyone liked the post. And don't drink the lemonade. F'uck,F'uck,F'uck!!!!!!! He is back!!!!! You have my respect Banshees Scream, You've been called so many things on here but you still have the courage to place an entire essay on Godots leaving on here. I am impressed (p.s. sorry havn't read it yet because I am very tired at the moment.) Is it me or is that a brilliant post without it actually meaning to be? TAFKAG 70 Posted August 20, 2010 GODOT'S LAST POST When Dorothy Parker was told of the death of the famously taciturn US President Calvin Coolidge, she replied: "How can they tell?" That's what worries me about the DL. If the success of a newspaper is measured in circulation, the success of a forum has to be measured in the number of posts. Yes it needs good posts, but it also needs healthy debate and banter and there is precious little of that here anymore. Very few members announce they are going to stop posting. It's a silly thing to do anyway because you never know when you are going to get the urge. Instead they simply give up looking in or are distracted by other things (like work as HCW suggested?). A debate such as this is always sensitive because if you suggest the best days are gone, relatively new members are pissed off because they do not have a point of comparison and it suggests that their own posts are not up to snuff. It also pisses off those who do keep on posting, carrying the torch so to speak. I know we have had this debate before and if any mod can find it please merge the topics. I had a cursory search before apathy kicked in and that's the problem, I suspect. People are not posting because they have grown apathetic. That's my theory. The debate was also held some time ago in the Hartlepool Deadlypool and when did anyone last post there? What's happened to HPDP is happening here. Perhaps it is time there was a bit of reform and I have some suggestions: Moderators - yes we all know it involves some work but it should also involve a bit of leadership. If moderators can no longer be bothered to post regularly (or who have decided to get a life, I don't blame them) they should have that responsibility removed and it should be given to some who do. Honez is a good example of a mod who leads by example, with witty posts almost every day - not tons of them - but interesting posts. MPFC posts more than anyone but someone has to and most of his posts are a good standard. Why isn't he a mod? He's a good bloke who cares about the place. It's time there was a shake up among the mods, admins please take note (if you can be bothered). A bit of sh*t should be celebrated. When Star Crossed posted an outrageous personal attack on Lardy he was roundly condemned but Lardy of all people needs no one to defend her. At least he livened things up a bit. He'd obviously had a bad day at work. Some posters get a hard time on this site. Banshees was finally driven off when everyone thought he had a hide as tough as a rhino. Not so, it seems. Apart from Canadian Paul whose posts achieve a consistent level of dullness, most people, even Banshees have their good days. I don't see eye to eye with everything SC writes (apart from any comment on the Big Lebowsky) and I'm sure the feeling is mutual but at least, in his own peculiar way, he cares about this place and about quality posting. I wish everyone here who has a birthday a happy birthday, naturally, but long lines of dull happy birthday posts? Nothing wrong with it except it's the only thing that attracts posts now, that and obscure deaths of friend's ancient uncles. What's that all about? Also these dull "who's gonna die next votes" where people post their choice - boring, boring, boring. I know I'm risking the wrath of fellow posters (some of whom I count as friends, although not Windsor who is entertaining as a poster, mostly, but is a bit too odd and generationally adrift from me, comes from Fraserburgh, spends too much time on buses and allows himself to be kicked around by his employers). But, in the immortal words of Clark Gable, frankly my dears, I don't give a f'uck (and the swearfilter - an area of mod abuse that pisses off most posters should be amended for a start. If I want to say f'uck I should be able to say so like any grown up without a f'ucking apostrophe. A bit of a shitstorm directed my way is better than nothing at all, not that I will be defending any "kick Godot" posts (even if this becomes a sport to provoke a response). I'm off. I never intended to stay more than 3,000 posts. So this is my valedictory post. Please don't read any of this as fair comment. I don't do fair comment, and I know some, as before, will detect a whiff of hypocrisy that is characteristic of my posting. Since I am off (I really, really am) and don't intend to contribute to this thread I suppose it will drown in apathy with the rest of the site but I hope it at least shows that I care about the DL and hope those who attend the Deathcon III (that I am unable to attend) will give it some debate. Best wishes to those who will try harder than I am prepared to do to sustain the site as a fun place to visit. I'm going to miss this place and expect I will be lurking and will be mightily tempted to contribute but I'm going to try not to lurk and to kick the habit completely. I've really enjoyed the past 5 years (nearly) of posting, or four of them at least. Death by atrophy is the worst death of all. The DL doesn't deserve that. So long and thanks for all the squid. Godot Er....that's it, finito, done, ended, no more, definitely the last word from me, signed off, departed, quit, wrapped up, zipped, schtum from now on, gone for good and that's a promise, no honestly..... Maybe I'm just in a funny mood, but the last couple of weeks have been as depressing, post-wise, as any since I've been here. Spade_Cooley 9,538 Posted August 20, 2010 One thing it's probably worth pointing out is that, as a n00b to any established forum (and this one goes back to at least, what, 04? Further?) you have, as I see it, three options 1) Overbearing earnestness, every single post full of some boy scout-ish smiling and nodding at elder posters, never saying anything vaguely controversial or potstirring 2) Act like you would normally, as if you'd been on the forum for the past five years, put your feet up, make yourself feel at home 3) Outright troll the place to shit I think it's usually acknowledged that the ideal route for anyone to take is to go from step 1 to step 2 over a period of time.... I mean, if you come in doing 2 straight away you bring to mind the old adage about the first rule of life being "never assume anyone shares your sense of humour". You can do step 3 to step 2, going from villain to beloved folk figure, but if you're anything less than hilarious you're gonna get boyed off the board asap. So yeah, it's a newbie dilemma. Either be actively tedious or piss everyone off for no real reason.

I do remember spending the day dithering about it and finally posting late afternoon. I had my first full argument with a DL'er a few weeks later, some tory, royalist loving twat who was winding up all and sundry about the general election, that led to Boudicca sending me a PM and we have been firm friends ever since then. I can't believe it was 5 1/2 years ago.
Godot 149 Posted August 21, 2010 I'm embarrassed to look up my first post. As I recall I jumped in studs up without checking any threads and was swiftly corrected and put in my place, then fell out with about half the membership until Bou PM'd me and said it wasn't a bad place really. I've always quite enjoyed the scraps. What I don't remember is what brought me to the site in the first place or why I decided to sign up - must have been something to do with George Best. All forums need new blood but too much old blood has drained away. Spade is an example of someone who slotted in straight away (2) and his handling of last week's Quantick imbroglio was a high spot during the past few months. The biggest problem for the forum is probably the competition from all the other stuff - twittering, facebook, blogging etc. Should the DL have a Twitter presence, and, if so, how would that work? Would it complement or compete with the forum? Can anyone else remember how they got here or why they were daft enough to register?

Yes I can remember We have a rather sick but very interesting club at work called the "Snuff Club" the Club has a lot of money in the pot or at least it did until last week when Jack Parnell died and the young man who was the recipient won just over £2,000. Incidentally why was Jack Parnell not on this list? So I log on to find the latest news. I think it would be good to have a DL presence on Facebook
maryportfuncity 10,655 Posted August 21, 2010 I'd never thought to look up my first post, but just did it. One on the thread for Charles Haughey former Irish premier. But I started as I meant to go on by starting a thread - Authors Last a Long Time.... - with my second post. Re the DL dying, activity hereabouts is our equivalent of the press 'silly season.' Zsa Zsa Gabor's croaking will get us back on track, or summat. Oh aye and I bloke I've pretty much lost touch with got me started. To my shame I have no idea if he still posts and - if he does - what name he uses.
time 8,618 Posted August 21, 2010 I think I discovered DL when I was googling someone famous who had just died. It may have been Emlyn Hughes, it may not. Following that I was an occasional visitor, having many a chuckle at the banter and outrageous punning and counter-punning following a celeb-death. I joined in order to vent my spleen after the talentless fat cow from Bermondsey died, and I'm glad I did. Its always better to participate than sit on the sidelines spectating. To get back on-topic, is it dying? For what its worth, I don't think so, but I also think there have been times when its been in better health.
