Professor Anthony King, a Canadian-born British psephologist has died aged 82. Those in the UK may well remember him best as a commentator on the BBC's General Election coverage.
It's on the live blog here under an entry at 9:34am.

He taught at Essex University where I study until last year I think. He taught a lot of my friends in their first year.No one had heard he was ill just on study leave which can be ominous.Apparently he also had an affair with Shirley Williams.

Not really an affair, though the press reported it as so: he was a widower, her husband ran off with another woman. They both then met other folk and remarried.

The K-Punk scene was just too commercial by the time he started blogging, the real K-Punk took place in the Fanzine Era.

With the rash of absolute nobodies being posted this past week -- and I think we know who we can attribute that to (look no further than the entry above this), allow me to post someone who should likely not get his 15 minutes but shall.

Former California State Librarian Kevin Starr, who is deemed the pre-eminent historian of the Golden State, has died. He was 76.

Starr died of a heart attack Saturday at a hospital in San Francisco. Starr, a professor of history at the University of Southern California, researched and wrote "Americans and the California Dream," a series of books considered the definitive account of the California story.

Various reports online that Raymond Smullyan has died aged 97. So far all I can see is Twitter/Facebook posts from academics, no obituary yet but it appears he passed away yesterday.

Edit: Here is an obituary.

He's definitely a big name. He has not been picked for the DDP but I'd be shocked if he does not obit.

Rarely heard of him, but this comes up on Wikiquote:

Why should I worry about dying? It's not going to happen in my lifetime!

That, I like.

Ah, the old Epicurean view,..

Death does not concern us, because as long as we exist, death is not here. And when it does come, we no longer exist.

Another obvious miss for my theme team, along with Bauman and Todorov.
