President al-Assad of Syria

Recommended Posts

Mohammad Ghazi Al-Jalali, the Prime Minister, still in the country and willing to negotiate with anyone. A rebel leader has apparently already said Al-Jalali will supervise state institutions until they are handed over.

On Assad, this says (as partially mentioned earlier in the thread):

A Syrian Air plane took off from Damascus airport around the time the capital was reported to have been taken by rebels, according to data from the Flightradar website.

The aircraft initially flew towards Syria's coastal region, a stronghold of Assad's Alawite sect, but then made an abrupt U-turn and flew in the opposite direction for a few minutes before disappearing off the map.

They are referring to this flight, which lost contact near Homs. Doubtful. I still didn't find any reason to believe that he was on that flight.

Reuters quoting Syrian sources say it’s possible he was onboard and is dead.

edit: apols didn’t realise this was same reference as two above.

Yeah saw this one too, it will be interesting to see this unwrap but I have yet to see any hard evidance (they are basing it on unnamed sources thus far) to suggest that he did board this flight, it makes zero sense to me judging by the route it took.

He'll be fine. He's going to live in exile in Iran or Russia. I just fear for the Syrian people. Assad is horrible and it's hard not to celebrate his collapse, but who knows what will take power with this power vacuum.

Could go like what Libyan has become. A chaotic mess.

It might also break up to two (or more) different states, with a Kurdish-led faction forming in the north-eastern part of the country.

BBC now reporting he fled to "an unknown location".

Think it's extremely unlikely that he's dead or is at any risk of dying anytime soon now.

Worth remembering that his wife does have leukaemia though.

And like Iraq. Each time a dictatorial of that region falls, it becomes even worse for the people.

The plot for the new Madagascar movie sounds great.

Africa?? I heard that without the Syria base the Wagner troops im Africa have no support. Which African countries are allied with Syria and Russia to take him? Is it misinformation?

(I think the Ukraine War turned me into a Cold War warrior - from my couch)

Wikipedia just added the notable death of Ihab Makhlouf:

https://chouftv.ma/press/731644.html

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ihab_Makhlouf

He was a cousin of Assad and is among a couple of Assad regime people who were killed while trying to escape Damascus.

Reliable source(s)?

Anyway, looks like Assad himself was wise to escape.

Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine claims that the loss of Assad plane's signal is likely due to the actions of the crew, who were following the instructions of the Russians and flying under their guidance.
