For some reason I thought he was already dead. I must have been thinking of another person.

RIP.

I get him mixed up with Bernard Fox; maybe you did too. They were both in Titanic.

He played Macbeth opposite Julia Walters at Leicester Haymarket in 1986(?). This was my first theatre date with my future wife.

Very sad news.

So he'll be less remembered for reciting "Methought I heard a voice cry, ‘Sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep:  the innocent sleep, sleep that knits up the ravelled sleeve of care, the death of each day's life, sore labour's bath, balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course, chief nourisher in life's feast" than for "Gizza job. Go on. Gizzit". Such is life.

There's that other bit of Yosser dialogue that sticks in the mind, in the confession box:

"I'm desperate, Father"

"Call me Dan"

"I'm Desperate Dan"

They couldn't have casted a better man to play Captain Smith, and his role as King Theoden is legendary. RIP.

I'm not old enough to have seen the Boys from the Blackstuff, although I am aware of Yosser Hughes and Gizza Job as parts of the cultural landscape. For me, he is Theoden, King of Rohan, a role he played superbly in both films. A sad loss. RIP Bernard.

Just pulled out of comic con a couple of weeks back. Shame if so

I saw him at Comic Con in Belfast last September and he didn't look too healthy then, seemed to have mobility problems as well.

I told my mum about his death earlier and she was confused who he was for a moment and went; "Wasn't he in The Railway Children". "No mum that was Bernard Cribbins."

I also read it far too fast and thought it was Cribbins who died, forgetting he had previously died nearly 2 years ago.

Seen this fact before but forgot to mention it yesterday. An impressive accolade, and notable roles in both films albeit not the lead in either.

I've just been surprised to learn that his wife was Marianna Hill, the American actress who was in (among many other things), episodes of the original Outer Limits and Star Trek and the Batman TV show, and films including the avant-garde 1968 political protest movie Medium Cool and the staggeringly tasteless 1973 crazy-old-lady and retarded-adult horror The Baby. Much more interesting resume than all that Alan Bleasdale stuff...

The obits online mention that he had a fiancee named Alison. Anyone know when he and Marianna Hill might have divorced/separated then?

Maybe I missed it, but we never posted the cancer diagnosis of actress Olivia Williams:

https://www.vogue.co.uk/arts-and-lifestyle/article/olivia-williams-pancreatic-cancer

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olivia_Williams

Well, she recently revealed that it's "rare" pancreatic cancer that she still has, and that is being managed (maybe the neuroendocrine variant?):

https://uk.news.yahoo.com/olivia-williams-cancer-not-cured-060000013.html

Edit: Ok, Wikipedia says it's a VIPoma, i.e. yes, an endocrine cancer.

Haydn Gwynne, who portrayed Camilla in The Windsors, died in October 2023, just a month after a cancer diagnosis.

Olivia Williams played Camilla in The Crown.

Conspiracy theories appearing online in 3, 2, 1...

Edit: Important to note however that Williams was diagnosed in 2018. It doesn't appear that she's in any immediate trouble.

Gazette notice for the death of actress Hazel Maddock, who died 25 October 2023: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/notice/4615640

Not incredibly notable, except that waaay back in 2011 she admitted not reporting her mother's death and claiming her dead mother's pension, possibly for up to 6 months. As a result, she was jailed for 11 months for the crime. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2010247/Actress-Hazel-Maddock-jailed-11-months-claiming-dead-mothers-benefits.html

Hazel Maddock was 73. The Gazette notice references the executor as Jasmine, her daughter and the address is Wallasey, so this is our dame.
