John Gomery, a retired Quebec Superior Court Justice who presided over the 2004 inquiry in the federal sponsorship scandal in Canada, has died. He was 88. Former prime minister Paul Martin appointed him commissioner of the inquiry that examined problems with the federal sponsorship program in Quebec between 1995 and 2003.  The months-long inquiry looked into allegations of fraud related to payments of millions of dollars to Liberal Party-friendly advertising firms for little or no work. His findings concluded there was clear evidence of political involvement in the administration of the sponsorship program, as well as insufficient oversight at senior levels of the public service and secrecy surrounding the program's administration.

Jack B. Weinstein (wiki) dead at 99 (EU blocked).

Was the oldest living federal judge in the U.S.

That accolade now goes to Joseph Wilson Morris (wiki), also 99.

Notably, his death leaves just one federal judge alive who was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. That's Walter Nixon (wiki), 92, who was eventually impeached and removed from office.

US Supreme Court justice Stephen Breyer announces his retirement.

Probably wise timing from a perspective of the Democrats. If they lost the next presidential election and he was forced to retire then, it would leave the Supreme Court with just 2/9 justices appointed by the Democrats.
