5. Pope Francis

Sounds like he received some bad news medically.

I think we'll only know that if he travels much over the year. I don't expect him to go to Egypt but it'd be interesting to see if he remains active.

Also, he has one lung due to either childhood TB or a similar style of disease. He's probably well aware he's lived fairly beyond the life expectancy of other people from his generation with the same op. Could just have a healthy perspective on things.

Make of this what you will:

"Allies of Pope Francis are saying that he’s planning to follow the example of Benedict XVI and retire. But he’ll only do so once he’s appointed enough liberal cardinals to make sure that the next conclave doesn’t elected a conservative who will interpret Catholic doctrine more strictly than he does.

This, at least, is what allies of the Pope have been telling colleagues – claiming that they’ve heard it from the pontiff himself. (Francis himself is a notorious chatterbox and so are some of the cardinals close to him.)

The Pope, now 80, apparently wants to hold three more consistories at which he will bestow the red hat on bishops who share his vision of reform (whatever that may be: the details are still sketchy, four years in).

He could be gone in two or three years, raising the surreal possibility that we’ll have three living popes and ex-popes. (Benedict XVI looked pretty healthy when he celebrated his 90th birthday last weekend.)"

Avoids reading criticism to protect his mental health:

Guess he didn't read this morning"s  accusation then by Deutsche Welle about selling out to China:

"... The missionaries thought that by winning over the emperor to Christianity, they would convert millions in one fell swoop. Jesuits tried again and again to woo the court and always failed. As heaven's representative on earth, the Chinese emperor could hardly accept another, especially not one so far away surrounded by barbarians.

Little has changed, really. Chinese President Xi Jinping is just as confident as the erstwhile emperors, and now powerful enough to put the Catholic Church and the Vatican in their place.

[snip]

To get a foot in the Chinese door, Francis recently agreed to recognize seven government-appointed bishops, although for decades the Holy See had only contempt for the Patriotic Catholic Association and its defiance of Rome.

[snip]

"This almost blasphemous development will surely have an impact on the faith of many clandestine Catholics in China.

Retired Hong Kong Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, 86, has already expressed his disappointment. He has been a tireless advocate for the rights of China's underground Catholics.

"Do I think that the Vatican is selling out the Catholic Church in China? Yes, definitely..." Beijing and the Vatican are currently working behind closed doors on a fresh state church agreement that could sweep in a new era of relations between the two, starting in the spring. There have never been diplomatic relations between Beijing and the Vatican because of the contentious issue of nominating bishops, but also because the Vatican is one of the last states to recognize Taiwan's sovereignty. Pope Francis has already signaled that he is prepared to sacrifice relations with Taiwan, however.

The church also has to secure its market

None of this is unfamiliar from the world of business. The stronger China's influence becomes, the more Beijing can force its negotiating partners into compromising. The Vatican has said that overcoming the divisions will mean more freedom and security for Chinese Catholics, but surely it hopes to gain freedom on the Chinese market. Francis is behaving like the boss of a big corporation...

The Catholic Church needs China. So it has to play by Chinese rules. And just like every foreign company in China has to enter into a joint venture with a local company, the Vatican seems willing to accept that in China it's the Communist Party that sets the rules, not god."

I used to state King Billy was gay and so was his horse.

Unpopular opinion with huns, even to this day, although both statements were true.

Plenty of Irish flags have been blue, as have sports colours, and I think even the Free State or the early ROI fitba team played in blue.

Always liked the 'how many potatoes does it take to kill an Irishman' joke, but saw this on a hun forum the other day.

Interesting.

Remnant of the unfortunately named and conversely appropriately (for the 21st century) named Doggerland?

Or someone's misplaced the IOW....

Nice to see the cun....cult is still drawing in the crowds, 82,000 apparently.

Lets all be grateful for his firm hand ( well maybe the kids won"t) as we could have millions of militant followers running amok shouting 'Jesus is great' as they machine gun, run down the non believing masses or summat.
