RadGuy 1,614 Posted January 10, 2016 We are about to test Andrew Smith against his obitability. Smith of Feek who dies first? SC Plot twist: they both die on the same day, within seconds of each other. I can't see either making it to the weekend.

Spade_Cooley 9,538 Posted January 10, 2016 Unless I'm barking up the wrong tree entirely, it is the Flipper guy, who has a Go Fund Me page for Stage IV cancer. I've no idea what his status is, but with Spade's record in sniffing out terminal cases from completely under the radar I'd have Halpin's obituary ready to print in 2016. Ok if so it (cancer etc) didn't pop up whilst Googling around. Only medical anything I found was 1993 lol. I figure there's a reason...but I didn't see it.SC Edit: if you mean this: https://www.gofundme.com/pc62tqxk then let's hope whoever Kathy Kerley (unverified by FB) is legit, as it's the sole mention of Halpin's 'cancer' on the Web. Spade looking good seeing as Kerley's funding page in 3 months has only netted $1100 of the $25000 needed to save his life! Kathy Kerlin is friends with Halpin on Facebook, so I'm pretty confident the GoFundMe is legit. I may not be the best pure deadpooler out there, but my research game is second to none. viGnoS 18 Posted January 11, 2016 David Bowie death sounds like the end of my last hopes to see an obit for Michel Delpech... btw I had Bowie in my drug themed DDP list in 2015, world is so heartless

Pampanini's biggest role, as far as I can ascertain, was as a foil in a mediocre entry in the Toto film canon, "47 Morto Che Parla". The Telegraph also spelled her name wrong in the headline.
gcreptile 10,979 Posted January 11, 2016 Bad luck there with Delpech, having fellow frenchmen Boulez and Concorde test pilot die in the same week. But then they also made space for Courrèges (spelling?). Well, I guess there's still a realistic chance that his death gets a one-sentence mention in the usually generous coverage of the Isle of Wight festival in June. Death Impends 7,986 Posted January 11, 2016 Telegraph (along with Guardian and Independent) has two obit queues if you will, one is of the very notable people who get their obits pronto, the other is of people who are mildly famous (from a UK perspective) that are often filler obits for times when not enough people from the former category are dying but they still need to crank out a few obits a day. It can take up to a few months for the latter category's names to get their due in those sections (for instance Independent a few days back published an obit for the Staples co-founder who died back in late October - he got other QOs more quickly, just giving an example of how these papers in specific work) so I'd say anyone's loss of hope for Delpech getting a direct obit is still premature.

Sir Creep 7,070 Posted January 11, 2016 TMIB, I spelled David Bowie's name a little oddly, 'T-o-n-y A-d-a-m-o-w-I-c-z' which is how I pronounce it. So points should be coming then? SC

drunkasaskunk 194 Posted January 12, 2016 Just a few scribbling to discuss (if you wish) There have been a few mutterings about the “celebrity” value of some of our picks. What I am about to suggest is not my final thoughts on the matter, but are just a few ramblings for the general body of the Kirk to discuss. As we know, we need to have a mention of a death in certain outlets. No issue with that (apart from what I have already said about foreign picks having a better chance of getting a qualifying obit than Scottish or Welsh picks) What I am about to suggest gives MORE power to the obit writers and that is in how THEY choose to describe people who have died. I suggest that we only attribute points to those who get an obits from authorised sources ***AND*** which describe the “celebrity” of the stiff in the first (to be discussed -) 30 words For example – the following are from qualifying obits from this current game – “Italian beauty queen who became a 1950s screen goddess”. “The character actor was best known for playing . . . . “ “ the talented Cuban trumpeter” These suggest to the casual reader that the person concerned had some discernible “celebrity” attributes. HOWEVER, the following from officially scoring obits do seem to lack the celebrity status required (IMHO) for a celebrity dead pool – (I am not quibbling about their inclusion THIS YEAR as the rules are there to see for all, I am merely trying to put forward some suggestions for FUTURE competitions) “Brave mum-of-three” “a Nevada woman “ “Pakistani student” What do you think? Should we give more power to the obit writers ???
Dr_T 254 Posted January 12, 2016 I agree with the Skunk on this. I am Australian and was very familiar with the plight of Hassan Asif, but it never occurred to me for a moment that he would be a possibility for any of the Deathlist games. Partly this is naivety, but mostly it is because he was just a regular guy with a sad story, not someone famous. I would really like there to be some way of weeding out these picks on the basis that they are famous only for their death not for their life. Of all of the suggestions I have heard in this forum the one where they need a Wiki page at least one year old I think has the most merit (this would now cater for the Kate Granger types who have now achieved a measure of fame albeit mainly due to their illnesses). It is not up to me to decide on which deaths are more tragic than others, but with the cases of Lauren Hill, Hassan Asif etc there seems something more tragic than the celebrity deaths which are the standard fodder. After loosely following Kate Granger on Twitter last year I couldn't stomach picking her for this year's list. There was something a little too ghoulish about it for my taste. Full marks to the "cadaver dogs" who are finding these picks, they are playing the whistle admirably and it astounds me how well they have scoured the internet to find their teams.

That's fine but in my DP that has a rule about not being famous solely for the fact you're dying, I'm getting grief for Andrew Smith--so much so I punted him rather than fight it and have people quit my league (a few threatened). He doesn't have a wiki page. I'd suggest many athletes don't. So what say you--is he not eligible under your rules of stardom? I think the wiki thing is an obtuse thought. We all know what 'celebrity' is. It's like pornography--I can't define it but I know it when I see it. SC

Actually, he does. Anyway, Wikipedia has strict notability criteria for individuals. If you want to add someone who doesn't have a Wikipedia page to your list, check the criteria. If your person qualifies, create a short article. If they don't, they probably were not a celebrity.
drunkasaskunk 194 Posted January 12, 2016 FOR THE RECORD: - I would like to point out that as TMIB is the organiser any decisions about rules and qualifying obits, and who can and cannot be picked, it is up to him. I want to make it clear that I am not complaining in my posts. The rules are the rules. Where I come from we have an expression - "Mah baw, mah rulez" - which, for those uncultured readers, translates as, "it is my football therefore any and all games played with it will be played, without question and without any arguing, in accordance with the rules and regulations that I set out or else one can fuck off and play elsewhere with other like-minded souls." (We scots have a nuance for succinct expression ! ! !) So it is TMIB's baw, and his rulez. My posts are meant to be positive (although I do admit that I sound like a whinging bastard at times ! ! ! ) and I am merely trying to contribute to the ongoing discussion about the recent changes to the rules and to POSSIBLE changes moving forward. Once again, I take my hat off to you, TMIB, and to all participants for allowing the competition to go from strength to strength. Thank you sir and thank you all. DAAS.
YoungWillz 21,062 Posted January 12, 2016 Well there's no argument about Hassan Asif now: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3394895/Pakistani-student-Hassan-Asif-died-cancer.html The masking of picks such as these must just be an extra layer of work for TMIB et al on what is already an extraordinary job. Whilst I'd commend a change in the rules of some kind going forward, I'm in total agreement with drunkasaskunk on this issue as outlined above.
