Derby Dead Pool 2016

Recommended Posts

I do like that the cracks are mostly neutralizing each other, for example, Sir Creep and Spade stealing the unique away from each other, or similarly, both me and DDT picking Ronald Mulkearns and Gary Haggarty.

On the other hand, this is slowly turning into two different competitions, one of them basically being a game checking the newspapers in the final week of the year for any kind of hospitalised terminal cancer "celebrities", and the other one being the originally intended celebrity deadpool. I wanted to show the ridiculousness of it with my theme team. But it's also showing outside of that, and I think my suggested rule of requiring a wikipedia page in any language, created in the year before picking the team, is sounding more correct each time to prevent a perversion of the system.

The "really" famous cancer celebrities, Kate Granger or Kristin Hallenga, have these wikipedia pages, by the way.

I've said time and again that only celebrities should count. I've also been told time and again that Lauren Hill was allowed. So I played my team accordingly. In fact I should have done more so. That said I maintain that Asif has no business in this game. THAT said, don't hate the player, hate the game. I'm all for a rule eliminating the Asif's of the world in the future, and all for collecting his points until then.

My tuppence worth.

The definition of A CELEBRITY is a rather difficult one to make. How many times have you watched a UK "celebrity" show (such as IACGMOOH or celebrity big brother) and said "WHO?"

I picked Lauren Hill last year because I thought I would be a mug not to. She was a legitimate pick then and (if she was still alive) would be a legitimate pick today (as Hassan Asif is)

I do not think they SHOULD be allowed but I know that it is difficult to legislate for defining who should be allowed to be picked.

Whilst the suggestion of the candidates having a Wikipedia page for a year before they can become a “candidate” has some merit it does not allow for “new” celebrities, for example, WHEN did Harold Shipman’s Wikipedia page go live?

Even one of the picks from LAST YEAR, Martin Foran, STILL does not have a Wikipedia page (as I am sure quite a lot do not have either)

One of my picks is former TV producer (and my ex boss at BBC Information) Gordon Ross. He does not have a Wikipedia page. But he also poses another problem for me too.

Gordon has been all over the media in Scotland as he is a very vociferous proponent of people having the right to die with dignity, yet I am not convinced that if he passes he will get a scoring obit. I just googled him and I get plenty of reports from BBC Scotland, STV, the Herald, The Scotsman and The Daily record – ALL of which were accepted for official obits for 19 years but are all of a sudden no longer accepted for official obits.

It seems rather perverse that what started out as a British celebrity dead pool now gives foreigners a better chance of scoring an official obit as it does our ain folk.

I know that the candidate that this obit is about DID get other obits, but it is rather strange that THIS OBIT does not qualify: -

In other news I'm probably the last to get round to sharing my line up, kinda uninspired but bankable I'd say:

Glen Cambell – JOKER

Tony Booth

Richard Petty

Oskar Groenig

Paul Lamb – right do die guy

Brunhilde Pomsel

Gaston Glock

Joseph Kony

Joey Feek

Gazza

Rene Angelil

Bhumibol Adulyadej

Martin Crowe

Jenny Diski

Clarissa Eden

Zsa Zsa Gabor

Billy Graham

Dr. Kate Granger

Jeanne Little

Kirk Douglas

Mine were cobbled together at the last minute. My main picks kept dying towards the end of the year so I threw a few names into a hat and see what came out.

Kicking myself for missing Pat Harrington off my theme team though,

Any official judgement regarding Hassan Asif and the "UK version of the paper/site" question?

Not with me frantically inputting 450+ teams at the moment, no. But I do recognise that the Grauniad does rather blur it's boundaries as to which edition you are actually reading!

Yes, I do hope that TMIB reconsiders the BBC obit situation. While I think it's fair enough to exclude obits on the county level, it doesn't seem right to ban those that appear in the home nation level.

One of my picks for a few teams - Lemmy - dropped out of the running late on. It pained me to pick him and - fuck knows - it was hypocritical of me to have a pick for a person I was also holding a ticket to see on stage.

We won't know, though. It may well have influenced people's selections.

Yes, it did, I've rejected a few names as a result of the obituary qualifications, though you will find most of the rejects on other pools where the requirements are different.

Won't matter though, I'd like to see me get a few hits this year though to compensate for my wooden spoon.

Reuters.

uk.reuters.com IS on the list of sites which provide qualifying obits.

www.reuters.com is NOT on the lists, and neither are

fr.reuters.com

de.reuters.com

jp.reuters.com

etc . . . .

HOWEVER: -

The daily Mail on-line uses "wires" services (such as AP, PA and reuters.)

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/index.html

Just for clarification, would THIS count as a qualifying obit -

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/reuters/article-2943982/John-Whitehead-former-leader-Goldman-Sachs-died-company.html

Although published in the Mail (which is allowed) the source is reuters (Washington) which isn't.

Thanks

The vast majority of news items are cribbed, collated and published from new agencies, be it Reuters or Associated Press. In the above case it's got a co.uk in the URL and that's good enough for me, no matter it's original source. That the Daily Mail and Guardian etc pursue US/World stories for their own gain is entirely up to them...

Another weird yahoo uk sports obit for Michel Delpech in french, this time about his funeral:

https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/video/michel-delpech-inhum%C3%A9-%C3%A0-paris-193800625.html

To be honest, it was probably the right decision to exclude yahoo, judging by their standards of journalistic rigour. But Delpech might be the first victim of the new rules.

I guess, I'll let Spade do the work of finding an indirect obit, as he's probably got more skin in the game and he needs the obit to stay ahead of DDT.

As said before, I think Delpech is very much a case of "will get the write up when Guardian/Telegraph have a spot for an obit on their pages". He's not a rush obit, but he'll get one. He might even get one of the rare "live obits", if "Wight Is Wight" gets played on Radio 2 at some point and they mention he's dead afterwards.

Hey Spade -- you've a dynamite team, so this name seems out of place, cuz not a medical thing wrong with either I've found. Not sure if this is Luke Halpin the child actor from Flipper, or the bluegrass singer who performs with his wife (think Rory Feek). If it's yet a THIRD Luke Halpin, Please advise -- well, advise those who need to know.

Perhaps you are a fan of Flipper reruns on Netflix, or maybe you just like to think about topless underage blonde males stroking a dampened bottlenose. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

You think John Jay Hooker will obit?

I'm willing to take a chance on a 27 year old, with that kind of payoff (Andrew Smith). But for a 90+ year old? Well you must be confident. He's a perfect Deathrace, but here, I left him off. Not even sure he will see the NYTimes much less BBC. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Unless I'm barking up the wrong tree entirely, it is the Flipper guy, who has a Go Fund Me page for Stage IV cancer.

I've no idea what his status is, but with Spade's record in sniffing out terminal cases from completely under the radar I'd have Halpin's obituary ready to print in 2016.

2017 ddp.

3 points for any pick below 60 years old, diagnosed terminal/with Cancer prior to Jan 1st. That'd change the thinking a bit.

Ok if so it (cancer etc) didn't pop up whilst Googling around. Only medical anything I found was 1993 lol. I figure there's a reason...but I didn't see it.

SC

Edit: if you mean this: https://www.gofundme.com/pc62tqxk then let's hope whoever Kathy Kerley (unverified by FB) is legit, as it's the sole mention of Halpin's 'cancer' on the Web. Spade looking good seeing as Kerley's funding page in 3 months has only netted $1100 of the $25000 needed to save his life!
