He won't go to prison for this one. Aside from the huge headache of working out how you put a former President and Secret Service detail in jail (or should that be gaol?), it's a relatively minor, non-violent crime. He'll get a massive fine and some kind of suspended sentence I'd imagine. There are definitely crimes down the line that will see him serve time, but for now, he's just a convicted felon...and candidate for President.

He could conceivably go to prison - aggravation of election law to get elected President sounds pretty good for serving time. Practicalities are for the prison services I'd imagine, not the Court.

 

What Republicans should do is dump him and get someone in to address all the problems he says America wants solved. They won't do that, and that is trouble for everyone imo.

And they'll have to find a completely different nonpartisan jury for each and every one of these upcoming trials? Bloody hell, it'll be like mining ice in the Sahara. This must stretch the justice system to bursting point.

His campaign team are already trashing Republicans who are saying they need to respect the court's decision and the rule of law. One Trump insider told the BBC "it's a GOP Civil War". Either you're with Trump...or you're with the rule of law. Wonderful.

At the very least, this has made it less likely they can get an unbiased jury in his more serious cases, which is bound to be a huge problem for anyone looking to try to convict him in the future. Will it move the needle against him? With some people probably, but I don't think it shakes his base or his likely voters enough to make Biden's relatively unfavorable odds at the moment in the swing states get subverted. Only a real change in the economy could do that, and the economy looks like it's going to continue to get worse for Biden rather than better.

 

Given timelines im all the other cases, it's unlikely we will see them happen until after the election anyway, and this one will likely be pushed all the way to the Supreme Court if Trump can help it. Given how friendly they are to him, we could see him miraculously declared innocent at some point... Especially if he's president at the time.

I'd say I struggle to tell the difference between a man of strong convictions and a narcissist who goes into overdrive when there's a threat of someone else taking control away from him. In deadpooling terms the two things that manifest the same way are a long way apart, Nelson Mandela's strong convictions survived years of jail and he died a contented old man. Trump's on my current DDP team, and catching his tellytubby belly sideways on the BBC tonight I still think a stroke or heart attack might be lurking in there.
