A slight point of interest here: Larry Winn Jr. received an Associated Press article, but the Daily Mail did not run it through their wires. An early sign of the Daily Mail stopping their copy/paste from the wires habit?

Probably figured no one besides family members or deadpoolers would click an article on him,geriatric congressmen from small populous states are the AP one's that fall through the cracks

It seems to not have much of a pattern. Ralph Regula, Vern Ehlers, Bill Goodling, Joseph McDade and Maurice Hinchey all got their Daily Mail AP cut/paste.

I think it's fair to say that to continue to take Equatorial Guinea seriously as a stand-alone country is to entertain flights of fancy.
When a whopping 30 armed militants are a serious threat to taking over your government, I think enough has been said.

Gerard P. Conley Sr., former Portland mayor, Maine Senate president and chairman of the Maine Turnpike Authority, died Thursday after a period of declining health. He was 88.

Conley won a seat in the Maine House of Representatives in 1964 and was elected to the state Senate in 1968. He served as assistant senate minority leader, senate minority leader, and was elected Maine Senate president in 1968.

“This guy with an 8th grade education who jumped out the window at Deering High School … no one thought he was going anywhere with his life,” said his son, Gerard P. Conley Jr. of Portland. “He rose to become the second most powerful person in the state. He was one breath away from the governor’s office. It’s truly remarkable to have witnessed such an incredible turnaround.”

He served as a Minister of State under Helmut Kohl from 1982 to 1984, and also as the 9th President of the Bundestag from 1984 to 1988. After his political career, he served as Ambassador to Austria (1991-1995) and The Holy See (1995-1997).

He is infamous for a certain speech that caused his resignation. In that speech he played Devil's Advocate and "impersonated" the ordinary German in the Third Reich, feeling ever so slightly jealous of the Jews, and secretly amused by their plight. A rhetorical device inacceptable in the 80s.

Oh, sad news.

 

I once met him and his wife during a vacation in Portugal (in September 2015, to be precise).

We stayed at the same hotel and got into conversations after dinner several times, because we sat next to each other on the terrace.

His wife and my boyfriend were smokers and although it was a non-smoking area, nobody dared to prohibid it to Mrs. Jenninger (and the other Mr. Book) because she was a Grande Dame!

While the other two enjoyed their cigarettes, me and Mr. Jenninger talked about having stopped smoking and how lucky we are now as former smokers

He also told us some stories of his really interesting life (not mentioning his controversal speech). It were stories like that he and Helmut Schmidt were good friends (although they were in different parties) and during long sessions in the Bundestag they blink to each other across the room just to meet outside a few minutes later to smoke a cigarette or two, haha!

All in all he was a smart and nice man whose charm and intelligence you could not escape.
