Ami Brown and/or Buhari for 2017, Lachance and/or Carmella James for 2018 (I know nothing about the current conditions of either one of them, but Carmella James eventually woke up from her coma and could talk using sign language in 2019. Was "on the road to recovery" back then) MC Ren for 2019 & 2021 and Glenn Keast for 2020. Keast seems to have completely recovered from his heart attack while all the others seem to be hanging on by a thread (except June Spencer, but she'll be 103 in two days!)

Our current run has overtaken the Secombe/Longford gatekeeping drought of 2001. Death Impends 8,011 Posted August 2, 2022 On 18/04/2022 at 14:39, Death Impends said: He was picked again later but it wouldn't be a record anyway, Henry Lincoln was picked in 2006 and died this year. Jack Newton could've outdone even that if he didn't return as a pick this year. It was his first year in the DDP since 2003! My early aughties excavations last month uncovered an even longer span. Eric Hall was last picked in 2000, was unpicked for the next 20 years, and died in 2020. For perspective this means that no one picked under the "every celebrity has an individual profile" DDP layout can currently qualify.

Joey Russ 7,239 Posted August 25, 2022 On 06/01/2020 at 17:56, Joey Russ said: So, I was a bit bored, and was trying to think of ideas. Then something popped into my head. Why not make a list of names that were picked by the winning team of each year. Doesn’t matter if they died that year, lived, didn’t get a QO, or (in one case) die before ddp action but wasn’t known until afterwards. As long as they appear on the winning team as mentioned on the ddp site (so no Mark Crispin, for example), they’re fine. So the list goes as follows... 1. John Andretti 2. Frankie Banali Kidding. Sidney Noel Wiltshire, George Cross awarded soldier in the 1930s, died in 2003. When he was 20 years old the plane he was in crashed and he went back into the fire to save the life of another man, being badly burned in the process. He got an award for courage which was upgraded to the George Cross in 1944. Here he is!

Evil Grimace 359 Posted September 14, 2022 (edited) This seems like the best place to post this. If not, the mods are free to move it where they see fit. There does not seem to be an agreed definition of “bedblocker”. Sure, the perennial pick and dead pooling kryptonite. But a quick search of the forum links it to names such as Leslie Phillips, Shane MacGowan, Dick van Dyke, Emperor Akihito and past claimants to the moniker Betty White, Rev Billy Graham and Bob Dole. Notable contenders that have fallen recently are below: Spoiler 2021 2020 Appearances Name Appearances Name 4 Jimmy Greaves 18 Kirk Douglas 4 Murray Walker 13 Olivia de Havilland 9 Bob Dole 12 Vera Lynn 5 Betty White 7 Javier Perez de Cuellar 9 Prince Philip 6 Pierre Cardin 3 Valery Giscard d'Estaing 4 Honor Blackman 7 Hosni Mubarak As I see it, a “bedblocker” is a pick that has been picked 4 or more times and has appeared frequently in recent lists. Let me explain the reasoning. In looking at the 2022 list, there are clear bedblockers in Kissinger, DvD, Jimmy Carter, Barker, Phillips and Scales. And there are those who feel like one due to consecutive years of appearance, such as Lansbury, and notably both Greenspan and MacGowan. Here’s the list as on the official front page: Spoiler Appearances Name Years 7 Dick Van Dyke 2012, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 10 Henry Kissinger 1993, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 4 Angela Lansbury 2010, 2020, 2021, 2022 6 Bob Barker 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 4 Alan Greenspan 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 3 Loretta Lynn 2019, 2021, 2022 4 June Brown 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 7 Jimmy Carter 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 5 Tony Bennett 1993, 2014, 2020, 2021, 2022 4 Dick Cheney 2011, 2020, 2021, 2022 4 Queen Elizabeth II 1990, 2017, 2021, 2022 4 Harry Belafonte 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 3 Mel Brooks 2018, 2021, 2022 2 Mikhail Gorbachev 2019, 2022 5 Emperor Akihito 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 7 Leslie Phillips 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022 3 Sandy Gall 2016, 2017, 2022 3 Jean-Marie Le Pen 2020, 2021, 2022 3 Jacques Delors 2020, 2021, 2022 6 Prunella Scales 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 3 Sidney Poitier 2019, 2021, 2022 3 David Crosby 2020, 2021, 2022 4 Shane MacGowan 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 Here’s the list sorted by number of appearances: Spoiler Appearances Name Years 10 Henry Kissinger 1993, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 7 Dick Van Dyke 2012, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 7 Jimmy Carter 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 7 Leslie Phillips 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022 6 Bob Barker 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 6 Prunella Scales 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 5 Tony Bennett 1993, 2014, 2020, 2021, 2022 5 Emperor Akihito 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 4 Angela Lansbury 2010, 2020, 2021, 2022 4 Alan Greenspan 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 4 June Brown 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 4 Dick Cheney 2011, 2020, 2021, 2022 4 Queen Elizabeth II 1990, 2017, 2021, 2022 4 Harry Belafonte 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 4 Shane MacGowan 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 3 Loretta Lynn 2019, 2021, 2022 3 Mel Brooks 2018, 2021, 2022 3 Sandy Gall 2016, 2017, 2022 3 Jean-Marie Le Pen 2020, 2021, 2022 3 Jacques Delors 2020, 2021, 2022 3 Sidney Poitier 2019, 2021, 2022 3 David Crosby 2020, 2021, 2022 2 Mikhail Gorbachev 2019, 2022 Around 4 appearances feels like the start of bedblocker status to me. Especially with appearances year on year. Looking at those with three appearances such as Le Pen, Delors and Crosby, it feels like they are set to continue on future lists. I forget that someone like Gall is on the list, as their appearances are less regular. Notable examples of past picks not on this year’s list that feel like a bedblocker versus forgotten: Pope Benedict XVI (2017, 2018, 2021) - a likely returnee, but for a while, he felt like the furniture. Louis Farrakhan (2000, 2007, 2018) - yeah, when did you last think of him? As far as I can tell, 2018 was his last notable appearance on both the list and for a trip to Iran (!!). Both of these are below the (arbitrary) threshold of 4 appearances, but feel like much different picks to me. Is it the 'familiarity breeds contempt' of (near) constant appearances? Thoughts? msc 18,491 Posted September 14, 2022 In hospital terms, a bedblocker is someone not ill enough to die, but ill enough you can't move them, thus they remain in hospital indefinitely. In DL terms, a bedblocker is someone who, on the Deathlist, is only going to leave it through death. Benedict isn't yet one because they keep dropping him. Kissinger, who has been on the last 5 and will be till he dies, is an example. But the term really developed as a joke reference to the slightly dull Cmme favourites who were never dropped like Javier Perez de Cuellar, Billy Graham, going further back in time Dino de Laurentiis, etc etc. 1
wannamaker 1,415 Posted September 17, 2022 I was bored so I made a list with the nationality of every DL pick, some were hard to decide since they hade multiple nationalities, so I went with the one I thought fit the best, I probably made some mistakes because I'm really tired so please inform me of any mistakes so I can edit them. Also I'm using the names of current countries, so for example Gorbachev was born in Russia and not in the Soviet Union.
