Spade_Cooley 9,525 Posted January 1, 2017 Jagraj Singh - I have him in the Deathrace. A QO will surprise me. . I would have agreed with you, or at least made him 30/70 on chances of a QO, but a little extra research would have revealed he is Sunny Hundal's brother. If you don't think the Guardian will commission SH to write a "my extremist brother..." piece when he goes...

Death Impends 7,970 Posted January 1, 2017 And the two solutions to my allusions: The person I had inside knowledge of, about his cancer fight going well but who I expected to be picked by quite a few deadpoolers was.... Charles Bradley. But stomach cancer is tricky, we'll see... The person I wasn't sure if he's unique, because his age was a little high and who was a member of a one-hit-wonder group was Gary De Carlo. I pushed him to my second team. He looks like a DQSP pick, and the 7 base points were too few. I knew about Gary DeCarlo as well, and eventually suspected that he might be who you were talking about. But I decided against him long ago, because another Steam member died a few years ago with nowhere near a qualifying obit. But that was also in the pre-Mail days, so could be a solid punt on your end. Bradley, I get a Ronnie James Dio vibe from. Same cancer, same optimistic talk, same cancelling of tours... same conclusion? (plus, I felt it was fitting to honor Sharon Jones's success for me last year by picking another from her label...) gcreptile 10,970 Posted January 1, 2017 Hm, unique potential for me for Connie Johnson, Sharon Laws, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and possibly DJ Casper? This time, I had to pick Hvorostovsky. I didn't want to miss the "Pearl Washington of 2017". I'm surprised Sir Creep didn't pick Connie Johnson. @SpadeCooley: Aah, clever!
Spade_Cooley 9,525 Posted January 1, 2017 DJ Casper was my sub, literally was a case of "person with the least recent health updates gets dropped". Also, I like Laurie Brokenshire as a pick, interesting character. Former commodore of the HMS Raleigh, a CBE and apparently the owner of the world's largest private puzzle collection.Has also fostered 68 children in his days as well. If that combined doesn't get him a Telegraph obit, we may as well pack up and go home.
Bert Trautmann 58 Posted January 1, 2017 There's always at least one obvious pick who completely evades me every year; it's Rayya Elias this time. msc 18,442 Posted January 1, 2017 The other two teams then: Here's Who You Could Have Won (Pan Breed Reserves) Tony Booth (joker) Charles Bradley Jason Busby Geoff Fox Dorris Francis Smith Hart Steve Hewlett Matt Hirst Bishop Eddie Long Lisa Magill Colin Meads Craig Macgregor Paul McGill Rena Salmon Darren Sawchuk Valerie Spiridinov Peter Skellern Bart Starr John Wetton Pan Breed favourite Mary Wilson A mix of folk who wont obit, folk who were too 50/50 for the main team, folk who were too old, etc. Originally going to be a theme team called "Are You Sure You're Alright?" after the Bowie/Rickman/Wogan type deaths in 2016, but most of that shortlist died! Bart Starr is the only original team player from that one in the squad. Not the List of the Missed A THEME team, but one I expect TMIB to reject as a theme team for sheer cheek. The theme is: people who have been on the DDP, but haven't appeared in years. In the hope that some might both be saved from the List of the Missed, and that it might have an amusing number of unique picks. Joey Russ 7,225 Posted January 1, 2017 Calculated my points, and if I got every hit, my total points would be 213 (including drop 40 predictions). Surprisingly (to me) the one person who have yet to be mentioned on this thread was Rick Davies of Supertramp, so it's my last shot to an unlikely unique. gcreptile 10,970 Posted January 1, 2017 I really like DI's Space Theme Team, especially because someone picked Catherine Johnson. Her story is interesting. @Charles Bradley: My husband was supposed to attend his concert in Berlin in the fall (as legally requiered First Aid personnel). It was cancelled then with the diagnosis. At the next concert at the same location, the concert organizer said that the treatment is going well and they plan to come to Berlin in 2017. So that can be observed. If however the cancer returns, similar to that uk wrestler last year (I forgot the name), he'll die.
machotrouts 828 Posted January 1, 2017 Hm, unique potential for me for Connie Johnson, Sharon Laws, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and possibly DJ Casper? This is an embarrassing oversight for my #1 Hits team. Death Impends 7,970 Posted January 1, 2017 I really like DI's Space Theme Team, especially because someone picked Catherine Johnson. Her story is interesting. Katherine Johnson was a no brainer for the theme team, I feel. An impressive pioneer who deserves the acknowledgment. Plus really, really, old, and while the obit was always guaranteed, that movie coming out about her life only assures it further. I also found Eugene Cernan a solid find, as he was unable to attend an event due to poor health. Though of course, I decided to pick every Moon man in the end, so he'd have made the cut even if I didn't know that. Oh, and the joker pick of Ronald Drever, whose work was crucial to the detection of gravitational waves, has dementia, which received press attention as it prevented him from attending an award ceremony. There's even whispers he could get a Nobel Prize this year, should he last that long.
msc 18,442 Posted January 1, 2017 Someone did submit DJ Casper for TCD17, quite high on their list, which did raise an eyebrow at the time. Even if I'd googled their health, which I didn't, I'd have ignored that anyhow, due to Deadpool Host Ethics.
Death Impends 7,970 Posted January 1, 2017 A small part of me wishes I knew of his cancer before the Bingo deadpool started, due to the #1 Hit category, but it'd be too tempting to keep it secret even then.
