If he's not dead, someone better tell Bob Dylan - he's already given a tribute to Rolling Stone about his pal...

Hold your horses everyone. His death is inaccurate according to TMZ...

Time to dust off this old favourite then...

He was at the age where people do just keel over and die. Not everybody born late 40s early 50s will be on the radar, especially as I don't tend to think of them round then being as old as pushing 70.

Put Tom Petty up with Robert Palmer and Gary Moore as one no one saw coming. RIP. I now wish I'd gone to the Hyde Park gig. Bah.

Agreed, but I totally did see Robert Palmer as a walking heart attack.  If I'd been deadpooling then, he'd have been first on my list.

Just goes to show, you never know when the last chance will be.

Just as I written on why the old thread was gone, a new one was made. Typical...

Telegraaf, the Netherlands. Also mentioning he's still hanging on.

Same shit in English:

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/la-et-entertainment-news-updates-tom-petty-s-hospitalization-confirmed-1506979939-htmlstory.html

Earlier reports of his death by the LAPD were retracted (or denied), awaiting confirmation.

So it seems some sources aren't getting the memo that he's dead? Or is he really still alive?

At what point is it okay to admit I'd never heard of him until now.

Well, his death reportedly was confirmed by the LAPD, but TMZ and other sources are saying he's still alive, and the LAPD themselves confirmed he's still alive and are not part of his investigation.

Many media outlets changed their reports to 'clinging to life' (including Variety, who I think were the first to report his death)

Well, his circulation could be sustained by machines until someone (like a close relative) takes a decision that he shouldn't be kept alive in a vegetative state.

(Cardiac arrest means that "clinical death" had occured at some point, after which he was "brought back to life", but presumably he had already suffered brain damage due to hypoxia.)

Oh, I agree, but there'd been little in the way of reported ill health beforehand. His death came out of the blue, unlike for example Prince.

The waiting is the hardest part.

Well now we already have our biggest death of October

EDIT: I've been on a Tom Petty songs loop for almost two hours now, strange how all my favorite artists are now dying one after the other...

EDIT 2: STILL ALIVE...which proves once again that a huge part of the problem is media focusing on being ‘first’ instead of ‘fact’

I'm not sure if Tom Petty is alive or not but journalism sure is!
