I see Jess Phillips last night confirmed that she’s never spoken to a single victim of the grooming scandal, so really just further limiting my sympathy.

She, and Labour ought to start with this one:

These survivor stories are absolutely horrific beyond belief. Yet Jess is scrambling for sympathy.

It’s the same with Robert Jenrick. All the people calling him racist etc when the majority of the country likely agree with his comments. A lot of people in Politics just don’t grt how the country feels about things because the  Political bubble acts and thinks very differently.

As usual, citation needed lol!

I watched Jenrick's interview on Sky News yesterday morning. I have never seen anyone blink so much when responding to questions. He just has no conviction in what he is saying - in fact, I'd suggest he simply didn't know what he was wittering on about.

Remember Tom Watson? Well, I do.

All you have to realise is this is a load of tosh, stirred up by a video playing, rocket launching multi billionaire who cares naught for anyone but himself and anything he says is just more ill-informed drivel that helps nobody.

As for our own politicians - well, they are perfectly well-placed to dig their own political graves without any help from anyone.

Anyone want to talk about Musk here is fine by me.

Are you saying the Grooming Gangs are a load of Tosh? Or just some of the other stuff Musk is going on about as his addiction to attention gets worse.

I have no idea what these gangs are up to, that is a matter for the police, local authorities and successive Governments to deal with - you know, our own. I am not qualified to judge here.

If Joe Zimbabwe or Jessica Poland or anyone from Brazil or Costa Rica has anything to say on the subject of British governance, how much coverage do you think that would get? Maybe Musk has something to say about the price of eggs in the US or the California wildfires, or how many school shootings America can expect. Maybe we would respectfully listen.

His pronouncements on how other countries govern themselves - from an unelected billionaire - is tosh. All of it. Meaningless uneducated drivel simply spread to troll others.

You and millions of other Brits have endless commentary on Trump.

Ed Davey, who started a Twitter fight with Musk only the other day, has been called out for hypocrisy after he accused Musk of meddling. Wonderful tweet archaeology has unearthed his endorsement for U.S. Democrat candidates, and a call to sever ties with the U.S. if Trump is elected. I’d call that hypocrisy.

You can’t have it both ways YW. Either we mutually stay out of each other’s affairs or we should encourage the exercise of freedom of speech and say what we want about any international issues. I’m more inclined to support the latter.

Oh I can have it both ways, because my meaningless drivel is targeted at the Donald, not the United States and is confined to here. I can express opinion on the death penalty, the loss of schoolchildren, the use of weapons etc etc. without any consequence. Because, like Musk, I actually have opinions.

If I were to win the lottery tomorrow however, would that mean my opinion is more important? Would the masses rise up in support of me? Would questions be asked in the Commons? Would we finally get a Federal United Kingdom? Of course not.

I'm not denying Musk his right to say whatever he likes, I question his intentions, his words and what that might mean for your actual victims for whom Musk cares nothing. I'm allowed to disagree with his opinions, as he mine. But overstretching to say his opinions are valid or even necessary because he is a rich man is something else. I disagree with that completely.

Reminds me of the couple who won the Euromillions and practically bankrolled the Yes Scotland campaign!

Money is power and it gets you more influence and say. I don’t necessarily think that’s always morally correct, but it’s the reality, and changing it isn’t as straightforward as you like to think it is.

I'm with you on the reality.

However, I'm a somewhat educated man who has his own, meaningless, opinions, shouting into the void!  I've never ever subscribed to paying attention to people just because of their wealth. Of course, that is more important perhaps in the USA, but not to me.

We can all have opinions or the like, and sometimes I am open to persuasion on things. But I tend to find if you can, to find your own way in the world and be prepared to respectfully disagree where necessary. Musk is trolling the world from his own mind and his own bank balance. That is my opinion, and further he should keep his abnormally large wealth out of places he has no place being.

Of course, if Elon wants to join in here, I'll happily welcome him to the Forum, and happily tell him to stop wanking into his sock.

The sad reality of the world. Money and power go hand in hand, and that simple maxim is the reason why so many people in power just don't give a monkey's about your average Joe - they simply don't associate with them and don't understand the actual issues.

Elon Musk is a privileged twonk who wants to rule the world, and thinks that because he has more money then anyone he is more intelligent and more qualified to comment on things. There are a few things I might listen to the opinion of a billionaire on, but on the vast majority of topics they are wildly out of touch and the only reason their opinions gain traction is that they have enormous influence and can push them on people who can't think critically for themselves.

It's startling just how much influence you can have if you're a millionaire, never mind when you've got hundreds of billions. I know a guy who is well in to the millions and probably even tens of millions, and when I used to visit him at his office/residence all I had to do was mention that I was visiting him and the staff would take so much more notice of me because I wasn't just "some weedy young lad" but "some weedy young lad who is an associate of that guy". He can pretty much do as he wants personally because if there is a rule in place he'll find a way of getting around it. Magnify that to the global level of influence that Elon Musk operates and it becomes extremely dangerous.

You reap what you sow. For the years whilst in opposition Labour could play student politics, mouth off on Twitter, whip up firestorms and make mountains out of molehills. Now they’re in Government and find it’s a bit trickier to walk that tightrope, and perhaps regret all their tweets about campaigning to stop Trump, asking where best to pop over the pond to go help out.

I don’t remember such a fuss from the same quarters now enraged re Musk’s touted £100k donation when it was Soros making a £400k donation to Remain campaign groups.

Perhaps these opinions of mine place me in the minority here, although I’d hope we could all agree that Musk ain’t dead, besides being a bit of a lunatic in X he doesn’t look likely to drop dead anytime soon, and all this chat would be better placed in the Political Ranting thread?

Yeah, the Ketamine habit has been mentioned in many places online- so the 53-year-old guy may well have a bladder considerably older, it's a drug known for making existing mental health problems worse. Just sayin'!

Just thinking of a lot of other celebrities who used K like Matthew Perry who died, or Pete Davidson who drove through a house.
There's also this trend in the tech CEO community of trying to "live forever" and engaging in severely risky behavior. The death of Zappo's Tony Hseih comes to mind, which ended up in him dying in a fire high off his ass surrounded by the 100s of candles he lit himself. https://www.forbes.com/sites/angelauyeung/2023/04/23/wonder-boy-book-excerpt-tony-hsieh-final-days/

Shoukd try meeting her in real life. Total cow.

Wikipedia's "Political views" category tells a lot. Sounds like a moderate arsehole & single-issue politician.

The problem is not Musk per se, it's the global approval he gets from every corners of political and economic life.

The man farts, the fanbase buy his shit.

Every day, he pushes the limits of madness and everyone says "uh uh what a genius"... Yes indeed, in the middle of a crowd that does not see the truth in the face.

He's a Bond villain, but he already owns MI6. So, "game over, man". The best chance to get rid of him is for him to self-destruct.

But how large exactly is this fanbase? All I've known who've admired him have been loudmouth dimwits who think he's the most intelligent man alive. Musk as a bond villain sounds hilarious, I'm imagining Blofeld tweeting "Fuck you idiots" at MI6 repeatedly during small hours. He's making himself a prime example on why we shouldn't let any single person get that rich.

I think she’s a pathetic excuse for a politician. It’s easy to be a champion for women in 2024 Britain. It’s much tougher to call out extremism and intercommunity problems and pressures, and that’s exactly what her and her party have done for ages.

Even at her count during the general election, she refused to call it out. She narrowly held onto her seat due to swathes of voters in her constituency voting for a hardline pro-Gaza independent. Islamism – political Islam. It has absolutely zero place in the UK and it ought to be called out wherever it appears. They have 5 MPs now, which is somewhat alarming.

As they booed and jeered her as she made her speech she made it about “women vs men”. That wasn’t the issue at all. ...

Some of the largest issues of the European left (also a bit the centre and centre-right) here. Catchphrases about women's rights with not that much effort on changing things, strong pro-immigration stance and misandrist opinions. I don't know and don't need to know much about your UK domestic politics there but if any of you have hanged around immigrants from the Middle East or North Africa enough (I've worked with some recently, specifically a few from Iraq and Somalia) you'll realize properly how being pro-LGBT rights quite   contradicts with a strong pro-immigration stance and how many of these people stay in their own social circles. You'd hear similar opinions from neo-nazis. Maybe there is a collective white savior complex where we expect immigrants to think of us as infallible saviours, integrate fully into society, adapt our views and ways in exchange for a place to live and an opportunity to make pocket money from bringing us burgers by DoorDash. Bringing adults who have been religiously indoctrinated since birth, have a completely different culture and in lots of cases severe trauma (war, starvation, rape that in some places is a common practice - see Bacha bazi) does not work. Neutral example of this is documentary film Jossakin on maa about two young immigrants who travelled from Morocco to Finland with the future Turku 2017 terrorist attack perp. No idea if it's ever been translated but a very interesting watch.

What I find concerning is how the hard-right is being pushed on to us.

Twitter is particularly bad for it. I’m not sure how the algorithms work but they are pushing content on me which I wholly disagree with (although admittedly I don’t do myself a favour by reading it).

I’m getting so concerned with the content being pushed - particularly the amount of anti-state propaganda which has no factual origin - that I’m beginning to think the social media age should be brought to an end. Making us all publishers is clearly a failed experiment.

I've already gotten rid of Twitter, but YouTube feels quite like you describe. Good portion of the "recommendations" is political shite ("Boycott these types of products, the creator is woke" etc., usually) that I've been trying to get rid of for the last three years by clicking the I am not interested-button. If anyone knows a setting I can use to get rid of all politics-related videos please tell me.

I wouldn't mind if all these threads that regularly attract political discussion would be dumped into the extra-curricular section until there's news about their health.

I don't know what the laws around sectioning in the US are, but in the UK I've seen cases of someone being sectioned for less than Musk's public displays. I wouldn't even put it past someone referring him to Prevent were he an average UK citizen exhibiting the same behaviour.

It's an extremely high burden; New York is trying to raise the standard now with the problems in the subway system.
