Thoughts and opinions on the death list 2019

I don't subscribe to the notion that anyone is "too big to miss", or to drop.

The Queen is probably the only person without any known health issues  where I would consider putting her on the list every year.

Putting people on list because they are 'too big to miss' is just defensive and results in less hits.

Do we judge death list performance on how many they hit or who they miss?

My remarks are general, not personal.   Your point about long-standing DL names is what I'm talking about.

I doubt I would ever have put her on the list, because she has no known health issues.

And as I already mentioned, I don't subscribe to the notion that anyone is "too big to miss", or to drop.

No, I don't agree with that.  Not if the goal is to select people who are likely to die in the course of the next year.  Picking 50 people who are famous and 90+ is just not very interesting.  But then perhaps the Committee isn't aiming to be interesting.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. You make some good points but alas I cant fully agree (or fully disagree!) as I dont think the approach to deathlists  can be as cut and dry as that. For instance with the very old they are likely to have health issues that arent disclosed. Not all famous people talk about their health or show indication they have issues.

I also feel that as the biggest and last major female star from the early dawn of  Hollywood's classic golden era ,beginning  in the 1930s, who is still alive   Olivia is arguably now too big to drop as that status is utterly unique.

But alas I have made my case and agree to disagree. :)

My feeling is that people shouldn't be on the list if they're not notable, but picking notable people simply because they are very very old is just lazy.

My 2 cents.

The only case for including Sheila Mercier on the DL would have been her age.  I don't think that's enough, not if they are looking for people who are likely to die during the next year. There needs to be specific evidence of ill-health, and I don't think there was in her case.  Sure, anybody over 90 is going to be in their last years but there are plenty of other people with known diseases or life-limiting conditions.   And including anyone on the basis that they are "too big to miss" is missing the point IMO.

I wouldn't include anyone purely because they are old.  I wouldn't put the Queen on the list, although I might include the D of E now as his health seems to be in steady decline.  OTOH he is a stubborn old bugger and I wouldn't put it past him to hang on for the ton.

You could definitely make this argument for the 90 year olds with no known health issues being on the list because of notability alone. It's pretty difficult to apply this reasoning to someone who is a century old and has enough note-worthiness to make the list. For example, a current 92-year-old having a slight heart attack a decade ago doesn't make them any more noteworthy of the list than someone on their last legs at 100. It's not the easiest thing to find 50 noteworthy people of ill enough health for the list and then 25 new people year after year.

Honestly might be an unpopular opinion, but hoping we get some under 50s names in the list in 2020. Adds a bit more fun to it v/s when it's basically ancient folks in their 70s+.

Who those names would be couldn't tell you for the life of me, but that's why I'm not on the committee I guess. I'm sure there's a couple of someones out there who're both young and relevant, as well as being stricken with cancer/other life threatening illness, or are otherwise a bit of headcases where an overdose or such is a likelihood. Liam Gallagher anyone?

Yeah I agree but it's a bit frustrating to see that the deahtlist has only like 15 hits (in average) on 50 celebrities every year, I mean they could choose some better picks which can make the score reach 25/50. In the other hand, I would be glad to see some young celebrities like 6ix9ine (I thought of him recently) who could be a great choice… Choosing some young celebrities means taking the risk to have less than 15 hits per year…
