Thoughts and opinions on the death list 2019

We are now level with 2011 the least successful recent year.

Looking at this point in previous years there have been between 2 & 6 hits after this date so predictiions could be anywhere between 9 ( disappointing) and 13 (not bad).

Six of the seven hits have come in a 110 day period and there is still over 110 day until the end of the year.

A hit before 14th October will take us ahead of 2016.

I concede my prediction on Page 3 might have been just a tad over optimistic. But in general, recent years tend to level out to circa 12, so I think we'll get there.

What the thread needs is Sean's list of teetering folk from 2017, but as he's busy

1. Larry King - severe heart issues, allegedly on road out. Nearly died due to major HA earlier this year.

2. Little Richard - frail with health issues, no longer able to read fan mail.

3. Clive James - Written his "last article", allegedly. Also possibly twinned with Valerie Harper.

4. Tony Britton - Really old and in a care home.

5. Gorbachev - Spent vast chunks of 2019 in hospital, ill and frail.

6. Jimmy Greaves - Been on bored time since 2015.

7. Honor Blackman - Rumblings on here about her health few weeks ago?

8. Leah Bracknell - tbh she has Stage IV lung cancer, and could go downhill overnight.

9. Vera Lynn - Increasingly frail and really, really old.

10. Robert Mugabe - Hospitalised in Singapore several times for health problems

11. Bob Dole - Old and looks like fucking shite in increasingly rarer public appearances.

12. Akihito - So frail, the Japanese let him abdicate.

13. Stirling Moss - Major health problems, backed up by his public retirement and the word of our man in the know.

14. Jacques Chirac - Frail and end stages of dementia, no longer recognises anyone.

15. Nobby Stiles - Seemingly on his last legs since 2014.

It wouldn't really surprise if any of them die between now and December 31st. Plus I think we're due one of the old timers going, just on law of averages.

And here's those to drop next year:

1. Murray Walker. Yes, he is very old, but seems OK. Could risk a miss.

2. Betty White. Betty White theorem adfirms she can't die. But she will be there till she does.

3. Hosni Mubarak. Going strong. Too much.

4. June Brown. Still on TV, don't think she is going anywhere before 5-6 years.

5. Alan Greenspan. Horribly wasted new entry.

6. Dick Van Dyke. See Betty White.

7. Barbara Walters. Only rumours and hoaxes. Drop this Jew.

8. Harry Belafonte. Still going strong.

9. Valery Giscard d'Estaing. He has no health issues despite his age.

10. Ed Asner. Very well.

11. Vanessa Redgrave. Wasted pick.

12. Cleo Laine . Wasted pick.

13. Tina Turner. See above.

14. Ginger Baker. Not going anywhere.

15. Shane MacGowan. Too young.

Feels to me like it's more in the sense of "I'm old and won't be here for years and years" than "I'm close to death". We'll see.

Recently lost MTM, his wife and now Valerie.

Confronting his mortality, may just give up, especially if Gavin MacLeod carks it.

Next milestone. If we get a bit before 19th September we overtake 2018 & 2013

I don't know how likely that is - as ridiculous as it sounds, the 100+ crowd on the list seem to be perfectly happy to continue living, and I've always felt them to be the most likely to randomly pop off when a hit is desperately needed.

That said, if any hits are to happen, hoping for some of the perennial bedwarmers on the list to clear out so there's at least some talk as to who'll be brought over to next year.

A hit within the next week (something I think we could drum up) will take us ahead of 2018

So that's three deaths in less than a month.Perhaps some of us wrote of this year way too prematurely?

9 deaths from 9 months is pretty respectable, certainly.

I mean, I still think the list was way too conservative this year with nothing but the old ones/known terminally ill people (and even then pretty old terminally ill people).

Someone like Ricksen would have been a good punt for this year, or a couple of younger names. Make it a bit more of an intriguing list rather than one that's basically 'here's an old person who'll probably die soon.'

My current verdicts as we enter the final quarter of the year and with Ginger gone.

Kirk Douglas -  Think he'll see his 103rd and 2020 now.

Olivia De Haviland - Should be fine for the 2020 starting line.

Duke of Edinburgh - Slowly deteriorating but should last a bit yet.

Leah Bracknell - Continues to defy the odds, could see 2021 let alone 2020.

Vera Lynn - Accelerating health, don't think she'll survive the winter.

Jimmy Carter - Not going anywhere soon but too old to be dropped now.

Pierre Cardin - Quiet of late but his age makes him too risky to be dropped.

Bob Dole - Looks like he will get a really high position in the 2020 list if he makes it.

Henry Kissinger - Still making public appearances despite being unable to walk.

Jerry Stiller - Quiet of late but could be worth dropping next year.

Javier Perez De Cueller - Could go any time.

Bob Barker - Somehow managing to cling on.

Murray Walker - Still writing columns but too old to be dropped now.

Emperor Akihito - Nothing new about his health, could be a risky drop for next year.

Betty White - Could last a bit yet but too big to miss of course.

Hosni Mubarak - Quiet of late but still young enough to take a DL sabbatical.

June Brown - Still acting, worth dropping for 2020.

Stirling Moss - Could go any time.

Alan Greenspan - Wasted pick

Dick Van Dyke - One of the most stupid picks ever, not going anywhere, must be dropped for 2020.

Nobby Stiles - Somehow still clinging on, must be at least top 10 for the 2020 list if he makes it.

Barbara Walters - Worth bringing her back for the 2020 list.

Honor Blackman - Not been seen in public for a few years now, think she's a lock until she goes.

Harry Belafonte - Quiet of late but should stay on the list every year now.

Desmond Tutu - Looked really well recently with Prince Harry and his entourage, a worthy drop next year.

Valery Giscard d'Estaing - Now outlived two of his successors, stood unaided at Chirac's funeral recently, I'd drop him for 2020.

Ed Asner - Wasted pick.

Vanessa Redgrave - Too early

Jimmy Greaves - Needs a lot of care now, think he's a goner for 2020.

Sidney Poitier - Worth keeping for next year.

Cleo Laine - Still performing regularly but an interesting pick. I'd bring her back for 2021.

Loretta Lynn - Looked reasonably well at a recent awards ceremony. I'd drop her for 2020.

Michael Gorbechav - In and out of hospital lately, could well be a 2020 goner.

Tony Britton - Quiet of late but too old to be dropped.

Clive James - Should see out the year but must be at least top 15 for the 2020 list.

Prunella Scales - Should last a bit yet.

Little Richard - Either this year or early next year.

Larry King - Could well be a 2020 goner.

Tina Turner - Wasted pick.

Shane McGowan - Had to be on the DL sometime but I'd bring him back for 2021.

5 hits in 47 days. It's as if those of us who say wait and see tend to be vindicated more than not!

Since Charles Lane died in July 2007 the number 4 slot on the Death List has been a very safe place to be, at least for the next twelve months, with not a single hit.

Prince Phil currently keeping the sequence going.

For a place so high up on the list that is quite surprising however it is not the safest place to find yourself. That would be at number 32 where no-one has died whilst holding the slot since Lionel Hampton on 30th August 2002. This year (and last year) Valery Giscard D'Estaing has responsibility of keeping the sequence going.

As she had already been dead for at least a week surely this has to have a claim for the worst DL prediction of all time? :P

Did we note that Robert Mugabe was the 300th DL hit since the start?

Worth a mention anyhow.
