48 years since Sweden's Gustaf VI Adolf died aged 90.
Carl XVI Gustaf, VI Adolf's grandson, became the new king. Carl's father, Prince Gustaf Adolf had died aged 40 in a plane crash in 1947. Interesting longevity in the family, three out of the five of VI Adolf's children lived to 90+.
Not long before his death, Gustaf VI Adolf approved a new constitution that stripped the monarchy of its remaining political functions, leaving his grandson Carl XVI Gustaf a ceremonial figurehead. Carl XVI Gustaf, 75, has been Sweden's longest-reigning monarch since 2018.
