I'm familiar with about half the songs on the current list.  Have avoided this game, for the most part, in the past because the lists were either entirely awful or I didn't know enough of the songs.

Whilst there is still time I am going to write a defence of Eleanor Rigby/Yellow Submarine. It demonstrates the breadth of The Beatles output. Yes,  Yellow Submarine has novelty value and musically Ringo's voice is wanting but it suits the song perfectly.  Growing up in the early seventies I do not remember the first time I heard this but I do not remember not knowing it.

On the other hand Eleanor Rigby is an intimate piece of urban folk where Paul's delicate vocals are highlighted by the pitch perfect orchestration which George Martin brings

Eleanor Rigby is a great song. But this game is not about the quality of the songs anymore.

I'm one of the older ones on here (although not old enough to have known these first time round I hasten to add) and am quite a pop music nerd (up to mid/late 80s at least ) but would imagine most rock/pop fans over 40 - 45 would know the vast majority of these....

At the start (sometimes the middle) of each game I listen to all the songs on Spotify to give a personal judgement. Then I compare the ones not so sure about with the songs I really like and know already (such as Rolling Stones, Beatles etc).

 

 

I adore Eleanor Rigby but I hate Yellow Submarine. Never liked the vocals of Ringo Starr.

I think your answers will depend on age.  I knew damn near every song from the 60s lists (very sadly I didn’t participate in the 1970s and want a do over lol, seeing as you people voted off the greatest pop song ever).  However the 1990s there was one list I knew maybe 8 songs total and had to listen to about 15 songs (there were the typical Brit love for novelty songs I dismiss without further information needed, I can live with that.)

But yes, I listen to the ones I don’t know.  Like any C.V., they get 30 seconds to impress me.

Oh me too in general but quite a few of the late 90s songs were from bands that never crossed The Pond, so were unknown to me. To me that’s a red flag.  If it’s a great song it would’ve been picked up by radio at some point. Same goes for songs by Yank bands that fail to chart over there.  I may like the song but if it didn’t gain footing overseas maybe I should reflect on how good the song actually was. In my most winningest humblest opinion.
