When that song was released, the magazine SPIN put Natalie Imbruglia on the cover lauding her as the next big pop star. It was considered such a snafu that they wound up mocking themselves for years with the annual Natalie Imbruglia award.

Those are possibly just one hit wonders? I am not sure of their careers otherwise. I don't have a special loathing for one hit wonders; it's not unethical to only be able to write/record one good song.

SPIN awarding Imbruglia gave industry payola vibes rather than naively thinking an artist would have longevity. They know they took a bribe to put her on, and publicly took an L for it.

FTR I think The Sign is one of the 3-4 best tracks on the list including all the songs but I haven’t voted for it.  It’ll be sad to see AoB go so ‘early’ at least as compared to a few songs still going that have no redeeming qualities.

 

Fun fact: It is also the answer to ‘name the only band whose debut album had three #1 hits’ (in Yankland).  Most people say The Beatles or whatever.  I had a pal guessed Men at Work (a great guess) but they only had two that topped the chart, a third stalled in the top 10.  The correct answer being Ace of Base.  There’s your trivia for the day.  I think all three songs/whole album was brilliant.
