My theme teams. Second outing for the Chrisses, with a slight upgrade. It's a debut for the Daves. The better performing team of the two will roll on to next year and face another name.

Hits of 36 Years Ago (1988)

Angry Anderson

Petula Clark

Abdul Duke Fakir

Hazel O’Connor (GOSH Charity)

Andrew Ranken (Pogue)

Just in general, this feels like it could be your most successful Charts Team to date. 1988 is the first year I have memories of the charts, though it was more Fairground Attraction (whom I have hated ever since)!

My three  delicious crumbles finally served and ready to be tasted and savoured.

58 unique picks out of 60 last  year.

Can I match or top this?

Apricot Crumble

Deborah Parry ( pardoned british nurse Convicted of murder in Saudi)

Maggie Bell

Blueberry Crumble

Robin Oakley

Enjoy!

The usual great teams, Gooseberry, and a few names I have to look up. Parry a blast from the past! Oakley the one I came closest to picking (but didn't) and Bell is of course a legend. My prediction is over 55 uniques by looks of it.

Incidentally, you helped shape the Dr Who team. Last place was between keeping Mary Peach or debuting Hannah Gordon, and a few months ago you told me how you thought Peach was a good DDP pick, so she stayed!

I remember first hearing that song on TOTP. I thought "man, he sounds a bit like Ozzy" then he appeared and I thought "man, he looks NOTHING like Ozzy"!

Pan Breed 2024

Jonnie Irwin (JOKER)
Rob Burrow
Jason Smith - councillor
Christoph Daum - controversial German football manager
Graham Caveney
Kathy Brown - singer
Steve “Mongo” McMichael
Simon Cowell (SOS Wildlife)
Charlie Bird
Michael Tilson Thomas
Jimmy Carter
Craig Maxwell - former Welsh Rugby CEO
Stuart Gray
Brian Barczyk
Black Bart - a pro-wrestler on the wrestling fans team, wonders will never cease.
Lizzy Musi - an 100% stats based pick
George Beattie
Erik Jensen - punt pick
James Whale
PJ Hammond - Sapphire and Steel creator

Beattie is my attempt at a @Gooseberry Crumble type pick. He was wrongfully accused (and stitched up by the police) of a brutal murder as a teenager and there has been a decades long campaign to exonerate him. The Scottish Parliament got involved last summer as Beattie himself is now "gravely ill". Hopefully no one else saw that, its my only likely unique!

I was worried about my Maxwell pick but I saw Spade and Pan Breed has picked him too.  A bit more confident now.

Hersl hopefully is unique, but a QO is dodgy even if he does happen to cark it.

Team Name

Steve McMichael
Esther Rantzen

Thanks for your kind compliments! 55 + uniques I'll  take that!

I took a risk by keeping hold of a few from last year to avoid there being a high total in list of the Missed because as @YoungWillz pointed out I seemed a bit jinxed on that front this year! If the small number of used again  names reduce my  unique tally so be it.  Deadpooling is no fun with no risk taking in my opinion.

Pleased to hear I  influenced one of your picks. No offence to the lady concerned but I'd love it to be a hit for you!

Angry Anderson  sang the charted  wedding song to Charlene Ramsay and Scott Robinsons nuptials.  Oh it takes me back to a world and age when life and Kylie Minogue was much more innocent  and tame before she became a saucey madam of the dance floor!

Seems to be a trend developing for "B" teams and even "C" teams these days. Hedging bets or FOMO on those juicy potential hits?

Well, that has jinxed that then! Ha!

With you on Fairground Attraction, bloody everywhere that year, horrid.

Had to pick one of the Timelords specifically for you - in fact my team has the most #1 hits ever.

Glad my team has brought back memories for Deathlisters!

Incidentally, I'm not seeing Yaha Sinwar on the posted teams other than my own. I'm assuming he'll have a smattering of support once the DDP unleashes its full talent pool. Not picked in 2023, but being head of Hamas in Gaza at the moment is unlikely to be good for your long-term health prospects. The Israelis have described him as a "dead man" - despite his current absence from the regular news footage there's no evidence he's already dead.

Anyone else posting hereabouts got him in competition?

He's the joker on my secondary team

The B-team is always the slightly more interesting team that I secretly like more. Admittedly, this year, there's a lot of overlap with DQSP. Total coincidence. Usually, I share these uniques with Spade on my main team (Michel Delpech, Ezra Nawi, Catherine Wybourne). Well, the B-team is older than many main teams anyway.

The C-team this year was my "what if all these bedblockers actually die" team, plus some leftovers.

I tried it once, but as expected there was one good team spread over two average ones.  Just sticking to one team now.

Haven't bothered with a theme team either. If I think of something interesting enough I might try one again next time.

Aye, well apologies for knackering any unique pick + violent death combi you have coming on that. There were only two of us last year who had the head of ISIS, the previous year I scored unique pick points for his predecessor.

I'm thinking prominent Hamas operatives currently targetted will be better supported in dead pools than ISIS commanders this year.

Ah well.  Andy Taylor comes.  He's an outsider at best :(

Qualifying Obituaries.

I do not know if I should put this in the DDP 2023 thread, this thread or start a new thread for DDP 2025 as my question concerns the 2025 game.

I have a question, if I may.

Why do we not allow obituaries from certain sites UNLESS they have been picked up by a search engine, UK YAHOO?

Obits from Hollywood Reporter, Reuters.com, Deadline, CBC, Huffpost, Chicago Tribune AND MANY MANY MORE :-) are not allowed UNLESS UK Yahoo picks them up.

Here are just 6 that have been used as "death notices" in the 2023 game.  I understand that there MAY have been other sources.  I have not looked.  But I find it strange that the RULES state...

"The following news sources are excluded as from 1st January 2016: Huffington Post UK, MSN UK, Scotsman"

And yet, for example, Andy Barkan's death uses a Huffington post article, written by a Huff post journalist and published in the Huffington post and it DOES count, simply because a certain search engine picked it up.

I understand that someone, somewhere must decide what sources DO or DO NOT constitute a QO.  I assume that it was decided that Reuters.com, Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, CBC and the Chicago Tribune were not appropriate for the DDP, yet we ARE allowing SOME of them to count.

I totally, 100% agree that any news content GENERATED by UK YAHOO should count towards qualification, but when they simply use a "bot" to scour the interweb for stories then these - IN MY OPINION - should not count.

I love the DDP because it is UK centric.

Is the quest for amassing the most hits in a year clouding out judgement of what should, and what should not constitute a QO?

Thanks for reading.

What do you think?

Attempted to make a Hamas theme team, at the 11th hour, but fell about 5 names short of a full team.

I think Yahoo has licensing agreements with certain media outlets which is why EVERY Hollywood Reporter/Variety/Chicago etc... name will get picked up, but, no Indian sources, for example.

I do agree that there should be some change. I don't mind though that now every Hollywood/TV person gets an obit. I more have a problem when, say, Nebraska state football coaches obit.

If I I recall correctly, the UK isn't the Top country of origin for hits anyway, it was always the USA. UK is over-represented though, which is still accepted here. In a way, the DeathList itself is like this, a majority of US names, with the UK being overrepresented.

In a perfect world I would only let Yahoo count if I personally find them an interesting obit to write :D

A friend of mine (who I submitted a team for last year) messaged me this morning very disappointed, realising that he'd forgotten to make a team for this year. He wasn't so bothered about not taking part but was miffed that no-one will have chosen former footballer Bennett Steele this year, who is his 'incredibly irritating' next-door neighbour.
