Actually reading the article it becomes quite odd

He left his wife on the beach and walked back to his apartment and the police have recovered his phone from the apartment

Now assuming he had not just left his phone at the apartment and returned to get it this seems to suggest an element of premeditation (or the intervention of a third party)

If he arrived at the apartment why would he leave it again and if so why would he not take his phone with him

I might be misreading what is in the BBC article and extrapolating but it is very concerning

Yes I was a bit confused by the phone being found at the apartment bit of the story - I wondered if he had never had his phone with him (and they mentioned it as a relevant fact because that would have been a method of locating him) but that would be odd in this day and age.

Re Mosley.

He wasn't holidaying with Kate and Gerry McCann, was he?

It’s the main headline of the print Daily Mail today because he works for them.

And the alternative would have been to say something about Sunak's major own goal yesterday

Pains me to admit I bought the Mail today - because they've got exclusive inside track stuff on a UFO case.

Are they suggesting Mosley's been abducted by aliens?

Nah, it's actually an interesting story, written by someone I know quite well. Gist of it is when the infamous Calvine UFO photo was taken in 1990 the two young men who were there when it was snapped were rapidly approached and, apparently, silenced by a senior British military officer. The photo was finally published last year and in all probability shows a drone that was top secret in 1990, but despite everything now being public the two blokes, notably the one who took the picture, haven't been tracked down and a few ufologists are keen to speak to them and think there's no reason for them to remain quiet. Likely relevant to this thread because they're missing in action, then. Q/o obit chances very low, mind.

The search heads into the hills...

I think Mosley might have chosen a bigger island if he'd wanted to start a new life as a mountain man :old:

Ridiculous that it’s taken them so long to trace his steps. Time is everything in these cases. Greek authorities about as useful as Portuguese ones it seems.

Very sad this case.

Which is why we should totally cheer ourselves up with a sweepstake on when his body will be recovered. If it’s anything like the Julian Sands case it could take months.

Edit, amended, I've just read the latest report. 11 June.

Blah blah blah. TLDR.

I've had money on him being dead since this story first broke. Not a shocking revelation I know.

I know it's just a tv personality we see, but he just doesn't strike me as the sort to vanish voluntarily leaving his wife in the lurch like that.

His whole raison d'etre on the telly is being reasonably slim and fit and the whole fackin island is only 5 miles long so he's unlikely to have got lost and be lying in a ditch somewhere waiting for rescue.

Interesting that he apparently made it to town and then vanished though...Got to have gone on from there somewhere, up to wherever they were staying maybe?

Nah, it's got to be Mary's aliens. This is in fact the sensible answer.

This is a very small island so specialist personnel in short supply.

HOWEVER

They seem to have spent 2 days searching a sea side path that would take about 20 mins to walk along and is fairly safe and exposed so not really possible for him to be missing or lost unless he was already dead.

In these cases it is crucially important in early days to consider where you could find them alive rather than where they might be dead. No point trawling the sea bed on day 1 and 2 - leave that for day 4 onwards when you know he’s dead somewhere. Unfortunately we’ve reached that point now.

My theory is that he had some sort of "argument" with his wife and they went their own ways to cool off. For whatever reason, when coming back to his hotel room, he left his phone there. Maybe so he doesn't have to speak to his wife at the time.

I don't know what his mental health situation is, maybe he then went "fuck it" and got a water taxi or asked a local fisherman to go to the next island. Without his phone he doesn't know what drama he has caused. I know when Stephen Fry was having some kind of bipolar episode 25 years ago he went awol and was found in Belgium.

The wife would have said if this was the case by now. There's total panic about him. My outlandish theory is it's for some documentary he's doing, he's very method. But, alas, I suspect the reality is much more boring and, sadly, more tragic.

My parents (both almost his age) quite often leave their phones at home by accident. I don't think that's any indication of his mental state or intentions. People of his age group and older generally don't feel the need to be permanently connected and online all the time, especially on holiday when he'll be after a little downtime.

The boring explanation is probably the correct one here, sadly. He went on a walk and met a horrible accident, and even if he was still alive and trapped somewhere, a 67 year old man shouldn't be out in the open for this long in the middle of a deadly heatwave.

So it’s one mile to do the boring walk from Pedi back to Symi where they are staying.

It’s hot but I’m bored with lying on the beach so I’m looking for something a bit more adventurous.

What stands out on that top map as something a bit more interesting?

It’s the roughly 3 mile walk round the coast to have a look at that island on the right hand side. That’s what I would have done and that’s what he’s done too.

And then something’s gone wrong.

Which seems to me also to be a completely understandable timeline. The only thing confounding me is why can't they find him?

There's reportedly been over 100 people searching for him - that's 1 person every 52 yards over the 3 miles, yeah i know, not necessarily done that way but as a rule of thumb it points out they have what you'd think would be more than enough.

Helicopters, dogs, the townsfolk, and that's excluding boats and divers which you pointed out earlier isn't the best use of resources whilst he might still be alive.

The BBC even have a reporter onsite now ffs.

Very odd.

Similar age as Julian Sands. Perhaps in your sixties your mind writes cheques your body can’t quite cash. I’m starting to feel it myself. Could have been a fall or even a heart attack like Robin Cook.

I’ll explain what a ‘cheque’ is some other time.

It’s fine to do these things in your 60s. For the love of god just bring someone with you in case something goes wrong!

My dad is Moseley's age and still climbs mountains, but always in a friend's group, checking the weather etc before and letting folk know the exact route they're taking.

Michael Mosley’s wife has made a statement, saying how devastated they are to have lost him but how they take comfort in the fact he ‘nearly made it’ in the climb that ultimately finished him off.
